There is also a strain of the H series flu on the rise too:deadbanana2:. Maybe H5N1 not entirely sure. Is trump not enough for us to deal with next year? His solution will be to nuke the Congo. Plus we've got RFK wanting to pause all disease research for 8 years. I'm just gonna walk into Walmart unmasked and let nature do as she must. **** me:deadbanana4:

Not that RFK guy acting the right doesn't get sick. Are they okay with that also? How stupid can a person be letting this happened.

I would rather cope with daily existential threats using humor than sail into extinction depressed. :gaygacat3:

whoa this really is not the time to joke about this kind of thing :biblionny: I saw Ryan's warning at the top and I was like huh?? and then the Katy pics and it still took me a sec… this is just very insensitive. like I understand dark senses of humor and using humor to cope and all that but this is actually terrifying and shouldn't be something to make jokes out of rn

i'm not religious but i'm praying for those who are currently exhibiting symptoms of this :cries: I hope it doesn't escalate to another pandemic and i hope it also ends very soon

Katy's album being such a flop, I didn't even understand why she was she was being posted despite me reading the death toll :deadbanana:

But that aside I feel so terrible for the people who had to suffer from this. this is absolutely awful

I don't know how some of your brains work when you read about children dying and your first thought is... Katy Perry?

Hope they identify what exactly this illness is. It's especially horrible to be happening in a country that has already been through so much and doesn't have access to the resources to handle this as well as they could.

i think the Katy joke is not limited to black/brown people dying and they would have still posted it regardless if this happened in Sweden or something

anyways, this is sad

All these symptoms, especially the higher susceptibilty, are straight up identical with the ones of the Australian flu, that's dangerously spreading worldwide, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a new variant or a recombination with a local virus in the same family.

I hope they figure out how to stop it asap, cause African countries don't have the same health luxuries we have, and that we take for granted. No people, especially kids, deserve to die for a f-cking flu, not when we have the resources to prevent so.

As someone who didn't post or react to any of those pics, I also feel 6 months is a little harsh. It struck me as dry humour (albeit immature and unfunny), rather than actively intending to mock death.

I don't see it as much different than the below GIF, which I've seen posted here hundreds of times. People died during this stage collapse, and I doubt anyone who posted it received a 6 month ban.

I think this is a bit of an extreme reaction when you consider that similar content has been posted and no doubt punished much more lightly.

Honestly it's not worth saying anything. Some of the mods here have such a superiority complex :toofunny3:

You have absolutely no shame. You read a post about children dying and a new disease that might affect millions of people and your first thought is about some Katy Perry album? I didn't even get it at first. Like, do you even think about anything else? Gross.

Whilst I do agree the jokes were in poor taste, 6 months does seem excessive. Sometimes people use humour a deflection tactic, because it's easier to laugh about a serious issue than face the scary reality of the situation.

Everyone remembers being locked up during covid and no one wants that to happen again. These seemingly endless news stories about yet another end of days type virus are both draining and depressing. I don't think it's fair to assume that people are laughing at children being dead, maybe they're just making light of a situation that's too scary to confront?

People did actually get banned for posting this gif. Not sure if that still applies because I haven't seen it posted in a long time. I don't want to get into the details of what classifies as "dry humour" but it is worrying to me that people read a news story like this and immediately think "gee, I'll use this as an opportunity to shade Katy Perry's flop album". Guess that's more of an issues with online culture in general though.

sadly no. people read "congo" and automatically thought that it didn't really matter. it's a poor country in africa so the sentiment ended up being banal.

had the situation happened in sweden im sure the joke would still be there but with a disclaimer, something like posting the katy pic but then saying it's a sad situation

people just have different reactions when it comes to African (and middle eastern) countries because of the constant stigmatization that they're inferior and less people. now, i don't necessarily believe people did it to be mean but this form of racism is so systematic and rooted in our daily culture and society that sometimes we don't even notice it. i'm all up for dark humor but there's always. time and a place snd this was not it. when i opened the thread i thought it was completely distasteful specially considering people just kept on posting it :rip: no one was able to read the room

with that said i wish the mods also took this direct action to the disgusting pro-israel members we have in our midst

OT: absolutely sad situation all around. i pray for congo and all those who are victims or have loved ones victimized
