AlanRickman1946 Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago (edited) South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced an "emergency martial law" on Tuesday accusing the country's opposition of ruling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state actions. Yoon declared the step as critical for defending the country's constitutional order. "To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea's communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements... I hereby declare emergency martial law," Yoon said in a televised address. I am always skeptical whenever a losing side starts to panic and accuses the opposition of insane things like cozying up to north korea or whatever...idk
Space Cowboy Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago The president was getting impeached due to corruption and he did this stop the opposition party
on the line Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Could be a hint of what's to come in the US soon soon.
Marianah Adkins Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Mess this is giving 1972 Philippines/South Korea redux. The same basis
Vermillion Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Endless constitutional crises around the world. I'm tired. Clearly a way to cut off his impeachment. South Korea's gender imbalance is so extreme culturally it's reverberations were bound to break the system at some point, although we've reached that point sooner than I thought.

Reeks of capitalist authoritarianism

Marianah Adkins Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago In other news, I'm interested on how America will handle this situation (unless this is another classic self coup allowed by the United States as they have always done). America's support of his declaration will be key to determine if the military will side with him or not.

Reeks of capitalist authoritarianism the real problem isn't capitalism or communism, it's human greed and selfishness. Capitalism often leads to exploitation in the name of profit, while communism almost always turns into authoritarianism under the guise of "equality". Any system fails when power and self-interest take over, and that's just human nature 3
byzantium Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago Is anyone Korean here or knows Korean politics well? Can you help explain what is happening? The flow of information is slow from media sources.
Marianah Adkins Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago Y'know its bad when even MAGAts/conservatives on X were against the declaration of martial law I'm really curious on how the US will handle this because aside from the fact that SK is a close US ally, there are some rumblings that the military may have supported this self coup due to the National Assembly's vetoing of increased military budget—-presumed to be related to the planned deployment of Korean troops in Ukraine. 1

The army is blocking members of parliament to enter parliament where it's only place to make martial law invalid We are not sure how things will go tomorrow. 4
