JoeAg Posted yesterday at 12:47 PM Posted yesterday at 12:47 PM another example of not knowing how to market an artist is Santigold her first album remains really incredible. it's just true pop perfection, and L.E.S. Artistes and Lights Out both had hit potential, but I honestly don't see what her label was trying to go for in her debut era like… the Converse campaign, the high budget and cool music videos, the actual live performance promo on big shows, the bud light commercials, the hype was all giving MPG, in addition to her background in writing songs for popstars. but then the weird release of her debut single as a double with Creator and L.E.S. Artistes and all the myspace hype was giving indie star realness. the truth is though, she had major label backing (similarly to Feist and Florence + the Machine). so idk, it really felt like she could've been the next big thing for a minute there too! 4

To be fair the market was oversaturated with popgirls in the early 2010s. Electronic and Alternative ones. And the industry only allows like 3-4 new pop girls max to be big in the charts. The rest are goin to the sidelines They selected Gaga,Kesha,Rihanna,Katy,Adele,Lana...and pushed em. The best time to breakthrough as a popgirl is when there's no one in the landscape. We were annoyed of how there was such a big drought of pop girlies in this last 2 years and our prayers were listened Now we have the bratz doll of pop (sabrina), the bull of pop (chappel) and tate and tyla have a chance to be real big too 1

ICLDXU4HS Posted yesterday at 04:44 PM Posted yesterday at 04:44 PM I think Rita Ora is probably the best example from like the last 15 years. She was off to a cute start and for a hot minute it really seemed like she was coming. That first era was not exactly high quality overall, but it had its moments and was a decent introduction to her. Could have been the Music of the Sun/A Girl Like Me before the Good Girl Gone Bad. They completely failed at branding her and making her cool and giving her some edge, though. I remember how she got clowned daily for her tacky fashion for years. She just kinda gave cheap knockoff while you had Rihanna constantly serving bad ***** fashion icon. And then those mid Jessie J'd songs they tried to launch her second album with were the nail in the coffin.
