Yakult Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Rina Sawayama was never on the verge of becoming a massive mainstream popstar though. If anything she succeeded expectations, coming into the business older than most without any connections and without ever having the backing of a major label (or much in the way of label support at all rn). Rina's always been working in more independent/alt-pop circles; HTG charted higher than anyone expected at the time and she's become a successful touring/festival act despite the weird backlash to the aforementioned album. Capitol expected Sky Ferreira to be massive; but she was never going to blow up because the pop songs didn't sound like hits (despite being great) and she should've been marketed as an alt artist from the get go. Same goes for Roísín Murphy; EMI invested millions into her sophomore album (I believe the term "female Robbie Williams" was thrown about) despite the fact she's always been aloof and completely unmarketable to a mainstream audience. JoJo, Stacie Orrico, Samantha Mumba & Natalie Imbruglia all could could have been a lot bigger if it wasn't for label mismanagement, loss of momentum etc. Edited November 27 by Yakult 5 2
illia Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Azealia Banks is a perfect answer. If only she had gone to the therapist, things would be different now 2
Letters From Adi Posted November 27 Posted November 27 JoJo was sabotaged by her label. She was only 16 and had like 2 hits on her belt already. 1
EnigmaticAndroid Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Normani to an extent. She had hype online that could've translated to something tangible had things gone right, but literally everything possible got fumbled. They never capitalized on her bits of momentum, the music is cute but unremarkable, she's never been able to craft a compelling artistic identity outside of being a dancer, and her debut came out like 5/6 years too late (). Literally a masterclass on how to not launch a popstar. Edited November 27 by EnigmaticAndroid 3
3R1K Posted November 27 Posted November 27 BUT she failed on purpose to become the cosmo queen she is now, so it's okay! 5
Funnyfatty Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Kat deLuna. Everyone was getting hits with Redone, her song Whine Up went #29 only and the rest all flopped. The weirdest part is, she had the BEST redone tracks i ever heard Whine Up, Run The Show, Push Push, Unstoppable, Am i dreaming should all have gone top 10. 5 2
Mariano Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Meghan Trainor? She was quite big/popular for a few years and I'm not trying to undermine that, I just think she could've remained as big for longer and establish herself as a proper MPG. Also some of her hits didn't get to smash cuz she was releasing too many things like EP then Album etc. I still think Dear future husband could've been much bigger if it was released properly right after AATB smashed etc. Lips are moving could've also been bigger but it was released when DFH was trying to Dark Horse its way into a single. 2 minutes ago, Funnyfatty said: Kat deLuna. BrokenMachine Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Camila Cabello was hyped as the Beyoncé of her group, had some hits, but ended up bankrupting (allegedly) two record labels consecutively and drying Shawn's career Edited November 27 by BrokenMachine 8 1 1
HANZ94 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Surprised no One mentioned the HSM girls Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens with better music and better labels they could have happened 1

Also, the promising thing about them was acting, not that much about music
P.O.P Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Remember the times when Cheryl Cole was supposed to be the next Kylie? Yeah 1
Papi Juancho Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Camila had everything in her favor at the beginning of her career, but the mismanagement by her label and team ended destroying everything. Her debut needed more singles but they decided to abruptly stop the promo. They rejected a bunch of songs that ended being smash hits (GIW, Closer, The Middle, and more). She had a huge fanbase that helped her win awards over Ariana or Taylor. After 2018 they made everything about her relationship that ended annoying 90% of the world's population.

I love her so much. She has a lot of great stuff across her albums, some of which I believe she writes herself, and she's so gorgeous, too. How come she didn't have a momentum and more hits after Torn? One of my fav songs by her, very Portishead-coded: Edited November 27 by amamoy 1 1
