Times that a #1 seemed in the bag but it got blocked

What  songs do you remember thinking were guaranteed Hot 100 #1 hits only for them to be blocked and miss the top spot?

Gewn's The Sweet Escape charted at #2 for multiple weeks only to be blocked by Mims' This Is Why I'm Hot  :rip:

Her new album Bouquet was also blocked from #1 on the Billboard 200 (by 94 albums)

Medellin being blocked by about 100 songs seems like a good example.

Kesha was breaking digital sales records on the weekly, Bad Romance (or any song at the time for that matter) never stood a chance.

Exactly. Monsters are trying to rewrite history by implying TT was not bigger hit when in fact it was.

Wasn't Nasty almost #1 on the bubbling under chart? She was so close!

I mean, getting blocked by yourself is one thing, but the fact that she reached #2 behind WBT's LAST week at #1, just for Gold Digger to leapfrog it and block for following six weeks is insane :suburban:

Bad Romance was breaking YouTube records and became the most-viewed video of all time WITH healthy digital records. You cannot tell me that if Billboard counted streams back then (like they started just some years later) that BR wouldn't have gone #1 and pushed TikTok down. It stood a chance but it just wasn't meant to be.

LBM peaked at #3, but other classic from them applies tho:

Spent 7 weeks at #2 behind Janet's All For You :deadvision: Love AFY, but Survivor deserved too

Survivor by destiny's child; Drunk in Love and Sorry by Bey

My own naivety but i really thought Love So Soft was going to be a #1 by Kelly

Shake It Off by Mariah given the time period. I would also argue I thought HATE U would be the WBT of E=Mc2

if Out of the Woods by Taylor Swift was released earlier, I think it would have gone number 1

No one expected streaming to count back then, so

Yes but popularity was still measured in terms of how many views you had and people consumed music like that as well. Bad Romance was a monster smash and was even more supported for free than Kesha's song was. In today's charts BR would've knocked down Kesha.

I was about to ask which one blocked which :dies:

As far as the Billboard 200 goes, I still get war flashbacks about The Weeknd's "Dawn FM" getting blocked by Gunna's "DS4EVER" in early 2022. :dancehall3:

On paper, even without the physicals, one would expect a new project from The Weeknd to comfortably get the #1, which had consistently been the case since 2015. Critically acclaimed, filled with impeccable tracks front-to-back, and not dealing with significant competition on the charts. But "pushin P" had to blow up into viral meme status, where paired with the mixed fan reception of "Dawn FM", gave Gunna the advantage by the end of the tracking week.

Once the physicals were finally shipped, it briefly returned to its #2 peak, this time blocked by peak "Encanto" mania.

As for the Hot 100, "Die With A Smile" this week, which might have been an inspiration for this thread. I really thought it was finally going to happen, especially given Talk Of The Charts' impressive track record in terms of #1 predictions.

But nope, this was the rare instance they got it wrong, and with the Christmas freeze set to dominate the remainder of the year, I'm not sure "Die With A Smile" will get another chance.

Ironic, given the other notorious case involved Bruno Mars as the blocking party, when "Leave The Door Open" returned to #1 despite Dua Lipa's "Levitating" being expected to finally top the charts.
