Because they're the ones thinking 'ugh, another comparison thread'. You could have expected it

I literally wrote in the OP: "I know y'all must be thinking 'ugh, another comparison thread',"

When the Joker flopped, people said not everyone is into musicals but then the Wicked came out and proved them wrong.

Two very different scenarios

Wicked stayed true to the material as it's always been a musical.

Its a movie that was always a musical for one...

One is a musical by default, the other one wasn't supposed to be one.

It's such an easy answer: it's about giving their respective fanbases what they wanted.

The Wicked movie is carried by an outstanding fanbase of people who love musicals, and have Wicked at their top, and the movie just gave them exactly what they wanted, since they were literally waiting for decades for the movie to finally happen.

Meanwhile, the Joker stans wanted J:FAD to follow the same line as the first movie, which it didn't, and on top of that, added the musical element to it

You missed one important part

Ariana and everybody involved are fans of the musical and wanted the movie to be perfect.

Nobody on the joker movie is a fan of the characters. They just used it to get clout and awards. They didn't respect the source material because they don't even care about it.

Ariana has a voice of angel, and Gaga has gargoyle's

Imagine you show up to watch a sequel to Mean Girls, and then out of nowhere The Rock shows up, and the move turns into an action spy thriller. That's J:FAD.

Wicked has a pretty defined demographic/fanbase, whereas I honestly don't know who Joker: FAD was for or what it was trying to do

because the script and story was horrible. its fanbase was expecting a worthy sequel and character development and instead they get gaga singing for 2 hours, the joker being🍇d, and humiliated and a terrible ending.

Not TABS enough.

Wicked is just not a success because it was always a musical. Look at the catastrophic bomb Cats was. Ariana played a huge part in bringing the movie to the pop music audience and the gp in general so let's not.

Because a musical sequel to the Joker movie was a crazy idea that would only have worked if it was a really good movie. It unfortunately wasn't I think even those who liked it will admit it had issues and wasn't going to please wider audiences.

Where as wicked is one of the most popular musicals and the film is supposedly really good.

To be fair cats was a big hit musical but in a very of it's time way. Wicked is a much more modern musical and still very popular but I do agree Ariana in this role was a big factor too.

I mean it's expected. Ariana is a much bigger name than Gaga in 2024. Just looking at their achievements this year:

eternal sunshine: #1

Harlequin: #20

yes, and? (solo): #1

Die With A Smile (Bruno Mars featuring guest performer Lady Gaga): #2

we can't be friends (solo): #1

Disease (solo): #27

JFAD box office opening weekend: $37.7m

Wicked opening weekend projection: $120 million - $140 million

They are not in the same league. :sorry:

You don't have to drag Gaga down in order to uplift Ariana. Both have great projects this year and Gaga also just literally broke an all time Spotify record a couple days ago.

Gaga has A Star Is Born, which was a smash musical that lead to her Oscar win. I think she's good. :sorry:

Well, yeah, it's kinda complementary to the point. Since Ariana, Cynthia and everyone were long-time fans, they knew how to give the fans what they wanted. I wouldn't say the actors involved in The Joker did it just for the clout and awards, but they surely put their personal (monetary and artistic) interests first before asking themselves what the fandom wanted from the project

My biggest problem with this version is joker is it felt like a marketing ploy for a movie about a guy having bad mental health. It's a movie in a joker costume, not a joker movie.
