Tropez Posted November 16 Posted November 16 A few years ago companies were really pushing body positivity, LGBTQ+ support, and I even remember seeing a push for non-binary pronouns. However, recent I've noticed a change. Body positivity isn't being pushed as much, in fact I am seeing more emphasis on thin body types. Pride flags are noticeably decreased, and not much push on pride as years before. Pronouns which I used to see even on corporate signatures, and even talked about in person has declined considerably. Like LatinX which was used so much, and commonly derided by Latinos has pretty much died in usage. I've felt there's been a social shift in the ideas commonly had from 2015-2023 with the high point being 2020-2022. Like it's clear we're entering a new era. 2
LovingDays Posted November 16 Posted November 16 Yes. I agree. I wonder what's causing it. I have my own thoughts, but I'll just come back later to see what other people have to say on this subject. 1
Popular Post fememeist Posted November 16 Popular Post Posted November 16 I noticed the shift when Disease left the US Spotify Top 200. 30
LittleCupid Posted November 16 Posted November 16 I noticed it when people started saying the R word again when it's been taboo for over a decade at this point. 7
Devin Posted November 16 Posted November 16 bc its now normalize and acceptable. this recent election will generate hate again, so that "push" for minority groups will rise again. 7 2
dumbsparce Posted November 17 Posted November 17 At some point we need to act like all these things are normal.. which was the point of the massive push in the previous decade. 2

ToMmY Posted November 17 Posted November 17 (edited) I think "cancel culture" is partly to blame. Too many people wanted to push it to an extreme and now it backfired and things will probably be worse than before. Mix that with too many awful people with huge platforms and millions of ignorant people looking up to them. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Edited November 17 by ToMmY 6 2
Mupps Posted November 17 Posted November 17 (edited) To your point about pride support…I think part of it is that companies started getting heat from both sides. On the one side you have the conservative backlash (target and bud light as an example). That side is so dumb but unfortunately a huge part of the population is uneducated/bigoted and a lot of companies don't want to risk provocation. On the other side you have people calling out companies for virtue signalling/pride washing during pride month (something that's never bothered me that much…even relatively hollow support is still support in my opinion) Maybe I'm wrong but I think lots of companies started being more subtle about it in order not to rustle feathers on either side. LittleStarmen Posted November 17 Posted November 17 Well a lot of it was non sense. Body Positivity is great but now ozempick makes it not necessary anymore... The pronoun thing became a joke, its totally fair to be non binary or want to be called by how you want but people invented pronous based on preferences/personalities Pride had a lot of pull back from business because of trans issue 2 5
YourNumber1Witch Posted November 17 Posted November 17 I get ya. Society always does this push/pull thing when it comes to cultural evolution. It'll swing back eventually, we just need to keep doing what we can. 2

Or maybe they could come up with marketing concepts that are universal but hire all sorts of ppl, including lgbt, to do the job. For example, a traditionally "macho" brand, say Gilette, could in theory hire an openly gay model to do their campaign. I'd rather have that than them posting the rainbow emoji on their socials on June 1st. 1

I'm going to use this post as a jumping off point, but basically it all relates to Gen Z being more conservative than other generations. Even the LGBTQ in the younger parts of that gen are like "as long as I'm accepted by straight (for example) christians, I'm in the clear". Meanwhile, millennials were more like "let's create our own safe spaces and content" which is how rupaul's drag race and drag queens had a huge resurgence like before covid. Now just take that mentality and apply it across the board to even racial minorities, disabled people, fat people etc. Everyone of a certain age bracket is more conservative. The largest set of people fat shaming are literally fat now which is crazy. Companies are just observing that and reacting accordingly (businesses are focused most on the 18-35 audience). So you're going to see a decrease in their outreach as society continues to move this way and everyone of all age groups seems to be following this backsliding aka the increase in "r-word" usage, rise of ozempic and body positive movement being done, people no longer believe victims of SA at all and attack them aggressively (a delayed #MeToo backlash), etc. Tikok/Ig reels also enable this with the rise of Andrew Tate and his associated acts like Adin ross/Joe Rogan, "Tradwife" content like Nara Smith, etc. It's all conservative mindsets just dressed up for trendy viral consumption. Rep2000 Posted November 17 Posted November 17 There's something called counter culture. A decade ago, queer rights was the counter culture pushing for equality. And now it has become the mainstream. The biggest reality show franchise right now is about drag queens. But does it mean we queers have all the equal rights as the majority? No, when a part of our community is being targeted daily and demonised to be 'the source of all problems'. Despite the fact that they are a minority within a minority, and less than 1% of the population. Now, being anti-trans/DEI/woke is the counter culture, worsen by the culture war manosphere. The pendulum is swinging backward, and no queer right is safe. Just look at Roe v. Wade. 2
James_Joint Posted November 17 Posted November 17 The only reason companies were promoting LGBTQ/pride in the first place was for money, and the whole Bud Light fiasco has now deterred some of them. It was always a business move and never because any company was actually supportive. Non-binary pronouns have never been taken seriously with most of the public and rightfully so. If you don't "conform" to gender identities, you could then very easily not care what pronouns people use to refer to you since you don't identify with any of it anyway, but instead you have people making a big deal about it so they can be a "victim" which then looks like an entitled non-existing first world problem, given what people of other countries like Palestine are going through. The body positivity thing has changed because people realize that being fat and unhealthy leads to a shorter life and shouldn't be praised. That's like praising an alcoholic for drinking. 8 1 4
kimberly Posted November 17 Posted November 17 it's not profitable anymore, when the half the country (and world, tbh) is rooting for fascist dictators.
Odette Violet Posted November 17 Posted November 17 andrew tate, cancel culture and now trump getting reelected

LordGaara Posted November 17 Posted November 17 Because the woke now realized that a fit, thinner body is healthier, they don't want to lie that a 100kg woman or 200kg gay man is healthy anymore 4
