LittleStarmen Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Its an amazing film, made with no intervention of a big studio(Universal sold it to Mubi), which made it more real and original. The director is french so she is not influenced by american woke politics in her art. So the movie was made outside hollywood + She looks incredible (her correcrive work worked) so seeing her is kind of amazing Edited November 4, 2024 by LittleStarmen 6 1 2 4
sweetblindness Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Did ChatGPT write all that? Also I don't know if that many people saw the movie just because of Demi Moore, but maybe I'm out of touch. Edited November 4, 2024 by sweetblindness 1
GraceRandolph Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Demi thriving while Ashton Kutcher is about to flee the country after supporting multiple rapist friends. Iktr! 4 1 9
LadyDiana Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 "Quick to label her box office poison" girl, when someone flops time after time, ever since 2001, I think it's safe to call them box office poison
Filthy Pop Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 She saw the gays were ready for a new camp horror queen, and she knew what she had to do. 2
SarahWalkers Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Box office poison crown has been transferred to others That film is very uncomfortable to watch, even simple food shots with shrimp or mayonnaise they can make it cringe and disgusting A masterpiece and future classic. This year Halloween season has been amazing, Terrifier, Smile, Substance, etc.

Hollywood has a very textbook approach to treating certain social topics in feminist movies and shows that can come across as not genuine and often forced. Not that the message isn't valuable, but it may feel performative at points. The Substance is very feminist, but in a way that is much deeper and makes you feel uncomfortable about how the world views women, especially how women view themselves and other women. It's horrific and brutal. It's something that Hollywood could never create. 11 1

The Hollywood Studio version could have easily turned Elisabeth or sue into some GirlBoss nonsense. Or try to make Elisabeth "nicer" but less flawed. Or make her have a "happy ending". The studio also could interefere and add the topics of the day such as racism, gay rights, american politics etc in a story that doesnt require (which has happened to many recent movies) Edited November 4, 2024 by LittleStarmen 1 1
pigeon Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 I know the OP isn't serious but I don't think anybody who watched the film watched it for Demi Moore. She is fantastic in the film though, I am rooting for her this season.
prettyinpink940 Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 She was never labeled box office poison. The Substance is just the first good movie she's been in since Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. It perfectly captured the cultural zeitgeist and had a brilliant marketing campaign, but despite how good she is in the movie, its success had nothing to do with Demi specifically.
BabyBenzz Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 she is AMAZING in this film but lets be real, no one watched it because she was in it..
Badgalbriel Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Wait, this movie only grossed 44 million? Damn, my session was packed, i had the feeling this was pulling blockbuster numbers
Mr. Duff Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 It's actually a very disturbing film, but it's a great one. I was perched on my seat because of how intense it was. It felt like an ASMR experience as the shots were just in your face/ears/skin. The only critic I'd say is that the last act is too much, almost unnecessary. Demi is amazing though, I hope she can snatch an Oscar nomination for this.

For exemple barbie comes to my mind , i enjoyed the aesthetic and the vibe of the movie and all the sets and how it was done but the message was super forced and lowkey shallow to say the least
