Isn't it 4.8? Or did pitchfork lower the score? :deadbanana2:

Did I miss a pronoun reveal? Why is everyone referring to them as they?

Halsey uses she/they. Maybe Pitchfork thought that by using they the misogyny in the review will somehow feel less pronounced.

What misogyny? Not liking the album?

Implying that she didn't listen to the artists she impersonated and that it was only good enough for Instagram feels like a common attack against women (a woman can't be a gamer, a woman can't listen to sophisticated music), for one. They also don't get to decide how Halsey redefines the concept of a muse, which they themselves admit is inherently objectifying. Throughout the text, there's this permeating idea that 'other women did (or would've done) it better, your input isn't needed', which isn't that far from some stan wars here. They're free to dislike the album, obviously, but when the album is about sensitive subjects and inspired by the feminine experience of post-partum depression, which is acknowledged but downplayed in the review, one has to walk a fine line, and I feel like they crossed it here.

Ok, but the impersonation bit IS a fair criticism considering that the songs sounded nothing like their alleged inspirations. Someone even clocked her previously saying one of the songs was mainly inspired by a completely different artist. She used the concept for a cute gimmick and it was fun, but I'm also unsurprised that fans fell for it.

But they are not meant to sound like the artists. The inspired her, be it sonically, lyrically, visually, how to song feels, it wasn't mean to be a complete copy of them. Imagine if she did that. The album would be messy, incoherent, messy and then the review would say that the album is unoriginal and just copying artist. Also, most importantly, she thought this would be her last album, that she wouldn't survive, her state of mind must have been affected hence also reflected in the songs.

It's why she said the songs were inspired by the artists. Not every inspiration has to be an exact carbon copy :deadbanana:
