I don't think there's a thought like "I will try this to increase numbers" but it's just because it probably feels less pressured. But there are many factors including the most relevant one of basically him getting older and more mature and discovering himself

He was molded and marketed as a heartthrob for women. There have likely been label executives and PR teams pressuring him to act "straight" all this time to keep their gravy train going. How many terrible stories do we need to hear about how people are treated in this industry for you all to have some compassion…?
