Capris Groove Posted October 26 Posted October 26 (edited) I think sometimes it goes underrated that Janet Jackson had a huge, non-stop run from 1986 to 2001. That's 15 years of continuous success as a MPG. Each album was a hit with multiple songs that charted well, and not one of those eras underperformed. There was no comeback, she stayed consistent. She also produced distinct, iconic eras between Control and All for You with different sounds and different subject matter, looks, themes, etc. As such, does she have the biggest continuous run of any female artist besides Madonna? Perhaps even including her? If not, who? Edited October 26 by Capris Groove 2 2
Sheep Posted October 27 Posted October 27 (edited) I can't tell if this is delusion or a set up but either way Janet is one of the greatest women to ever do pop music. That being said, there's like half a dozen artists who completely destroy her stats(Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Rih, etc) and a handful who have topped her numbers to varying degrees but are still collecting hits and will widen the gap even more with time(Taylor, Ariana, Beyonce, Gaga, etc) Edited October 27 by Sheep 8
itshyolee Posted October 27 Posted October 27 The way her reign could've lasted even longer if it wasn't for that superbowl incident Justice for Damita Jo! 2 7
CocoPouf Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and there should be more tho. 1
Letters From Adi Posted October 27 Posted October 27 She was massive in the US during her heydays. Having an almost perfect streak of Top 10 hits over a decade (many of them being 6th/7th/8th singles too!) is difficult to achieve. 3
Wicked Posted October 27 Posted October 27 The list of women in music with quality runs is mad long. She's one of them as is Madonna. 1
LegaMyth Posted October 27 Posted October 27 (edited) The difference is that Janet was able to stretch her eras and release little. She released 5 studio albums in 15 years. That's far less than the others. And even with her having stretched eras, her albums sales were still far below the other girls. Edited October 27 by LegaMyth
DammnBaby Posted October 27 Posted October 27 (edited) Her commercial run and quality control during that period are matched by few. They don't always overlap, and she made it work for 15 years. She was also way ahead of her time musically in some respects and we have her to thank for Britney. Edited October 27 by DammnBaby 1 1
bad guy Posted October 27 Posted October 27 She's extremely underrated. Her music should be getting the same praise/streams as MJ, if not more. Control -> Rhythm Nation-> Janet -> Velvet Rope is one of the best 1-2-3-4 punch for pop/R&B music ever. As far as hit-making goes though only Rihanna rivals Madonna on that front.
naval23 Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Her 1986 to 2001 run was INSANE - imagine blocking Destiny's Child from #1 on the Hot 100 for 7 weeks in the 15th year of your career and debuting with 600k+ sales Even her "flop" albums for the next 5 years "Damita Jo" and "20 YO" still went platinum and the 2 after went #1 4
LittleStarmen Posted October 27 Posted October 27 She has her share of success but she doesnt have anything big outside the US and was basically just Michales sister. 1 2

Soda Pop Queen Posted October 27 Posted October 27 the way I came in here thinking you were talking about her canonical album run... never mind.

It's amazing how people still have this ignorant take. Recency bias is a hell of a drug, I guess. 2

The7thStranger Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Just now, LittleStarmen said: the post says "Biggest"... Which the whispering relic wasnt And you said "she had nothing big outside the US." That's a blatant lie and/or your lack of knowledge concerning music history. She's sold out world tours, had several hit albums and singles outside the US, and continues to be a major influence on a lot of younger acts. She was just name checked by Troye Sivan last year as an inspiration for his most recent album. Sorry, but this "she's just Michael's sister" thing is only the point of view of people who weren't alive to witness her during her very long prime. 3
LikeaRebel Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Yes, and that streak most likely would've continued if the Superbowl hadn't happened. 1

This stale, tired, flat out lie. The US was by far her biggest market, sure. But in my (non-anglophone) country she has more top 20 hits than Mariah and the same amount of chart entries as Whitney for example. I'm sure my country isn't the only one. Would you call those 2 ladies local too? 3
ChooseyLover Posted October 27 Posted October 27 She truly is. The world had no business dropping her like they did, especially when Damita Jo was filled with more potential hits. 3
Støned Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Yes, in the US, she had an impressive 18 consecutive top 10 hits. She managed to be the #2 Artist of the 90s despite only releasing two albums on that decade.
