Is "Queer" going to be the next CMBYN?

No. We are waiting for another Moonlight though :clap3:

No. Initial reception has been lukewarm so A24 already gave it up on it.

Not at all. Queer is not a very accessible film - it's very long and it gets slow and weird. CMBYN was a romantic story but Queer is mostly about obsession and addiction

Yeah, it's two different beasts. I read Queer a looooong while ago and loved the specks of the dangers of addiction and Lee's longing for connection and feeling crushed time and time again sprinkled throughout. I think it will be more of a "second-hand embarrasment" and feeling bad and crushed for the character -and relating that with yourself having acted in dumb ways and wanting to be liked by one specific person at some point of our lives- type of film.

Tho I hear QUEER goes off the rails or completely shifts tone in its 3rd act which I hear turned a lot of viewers off. I'm curious to see it.

The film definitely reads as such but the main feeling-tone for me was that it shows desperation and fear of growing old and being alone as a gay man, all while being shunned away by the younger generation of queer men. Which will be relatable to gay men I suppose but definitely not to the GP

And yes, the 3rd act of the film is bonkers

I can totally see that element being taken from the novel as a main theme as well. Although the character there was in his 30s as far as I can remember (correct me if I'm wrong), so it looks like they aged him up by a lot for the movie to, I guess, get that theme across more.

Oh, that's a bit sad to hear. They said the same about the last act of Suspiria but I quite enjoyed it. Let's see if it's grating here. I hear they worked with miniatures so I'm looking forward to that (and the direction/cinematography overall).

I actually haven't read the novel so can't comment on that!

And I will say that to me the last act of Suspiria feels like a natural progression of the story taken to an extreme, something like with The Substance. Queer was more of a detour. It wasn't bad per se, it was an interesting vehicle for some aspects of the story and Lee's character arc but it was definitely my least favourite part of the movie, and the most unexpected one - but not in a good way.

I don't want to spoil anything so I'm intrigued to see what you think when you do see it :bird:
