Cruel Summer Posted October 25 Posted October 25 1 minute ago, Uncatena said: actually, Chromatica also used Helvetica (or a version of it) for a lot of its type. its also on the tour poster etc. idk im just kind of tired of her having these basic logos, all things considered. Her design team's typography choices are so bland. Futura for The Fame, Franklin and Helvetica for TFM, Impact for BTW, Helvetica for ARTPOP... she deserves something that stands out. but none of this truly matters, im just a design geek. I personally really love the use of Helvetica in The Fame Monster's promotional materials, though. Helvetica is a classic because of its pure simplicity - I've always seen it as uncompromising barebones minimalism without sacrificing function, so it's an excellent vessel for conveying information without distracting from the rest of the visual presentation at hand. When put on a single cover in front of the incredible photography of Hedi Slimane, it just makes magic, and I'd love if this era took some visual cues from The Fame Monster in that way. But to be fair, I'm a legitimate Helvetica stan and use it extensively in my own design-adjacent work whenever I'm given the opportunity, to such a degree that my current personal business card is two plain black lines of text in Helvetica against flat white. So I'm very, very biased here. Side note, isn't it fun to have pop artists who are so visual in their work that we can pull apart and debate things as seemingly minute as font choice? 1

Stupid Dump This is a pretty good comeback, I'm not obsessed but it does feel like a return to form. The final chorus and outro are GREAT. Excited to hear more songs in this direction.
Antikythera Posted October 25 Posted October 25 No doubt this is her most interesting work since the BTW era. It wont hit anywhere, but it is ok, she is finally doing real music that feels genuine. She should ditch the whole pop diva persona and do more of this.

Filthy Pop Posted October 25 Posted October 25 The keyboard part that was featured in the teaser adds so much to the song...so ominous
Baby Judas Posted October 25 Posted October 25 I'm surprised seeing Apple Sauce that high in these rankings. Applesauce-Stupid Hoe- PIss will always be Gaga's worst lead singles trinity. Fight with the wal!! 1

Its not catchy, it cant make you sing along or have something to get stuck in your head. The verses are good tho. 4 years of waiting and DWAS and she releases this mediocre song. Disappointed because I had high expectations. Where is the Lady Gaga that used to write songs like Bad Romance, Poker Face, Alejandro ..? Seems like she wasnt the mastermind behind those songs but RedOne. The only positive thing is that its better than Perfect Illusion and Stupid Love. Anyhow, I can see Disease flopping and in two weeks it will be forgotten. Then why he couldn't replicate that magic with other artists and he is a faded producer? Quickly. 1 1

I absolutely agree actually, and Helvetica was used flawlessly during the TFM era, exactly like you said. The contrast of the simple, bold lettering with the striking minimalistic but textured photography was absolute heaven and Helvetica's purposeful and direct design was cleverly used for the second era of a newly arrived pop star. At this point though, im bored of it. Chromatica was a step in the right direction, I loved the campy and clashing approach of the alternated "Meme" font and the cheesy serif used in all caps, it was really unique and again, the use of Helvetica worked really well there as well because those types needed a good contrast for larger, informational text. and yes, absolutely. I always loved that about Gaga especially. I will never forgive their use of Impact during BTW tho, it should've been the condensed version of Champion they later used for Yoü and I from the get. The tight, large lettering would've worked so well with the albums theatrical and alien approach. did you see the distressed type they used for the Times Square poster? I think it might actually be Helvetica, but it has a really textured and gritty approach, which works much better with this song than standard, all-caps, slightly rounded out Helvetica once again. 1
