Vixen Eyes Posted October 15 Posted October 15 So I'm revisiting Korn's debut album and this song is on it. I've read before that this song was written because when lead singer Jonathan Davis was in high school, he was being called the F slur for being really into the New Wave aesthetic (wearing eyeliner, etc). Now my question is, do you think songs like this could be done without the use of the slur? And also are there any other songs that use a slur in this connotation? 1
Gelato Posted October 15 Posted October 15 (edited) I don't think it's acceptable. Lizzo and Beyonce both using the same ableist slur in songs within a few months of each other was completely bewildering. And in Beyonce's case there wasn't even an apology Edited October 15 by Gelato 2
glitch Posted October 15 Posted October 15 I don't think it's particularly artistic and it often feels like a cheap way of stirring up discourse around your music. You can talk about discrimination and oppression without using offensive language. This obviously doesn't apply to people using slurs which have been reclaimed by their particular demographic. 1 4
Achilles. Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Hate when songs use the n word. Especially by big name artists and crossover acts. Like why are you marketing music to mainstream audiences that contains racist slurs that half of said mainstream audience cannot say but will inevitably end up accidentally repeating while singing along? 1
RussianRoulette Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Words are meaningless. They can go ahead and call me a british 🚬 all they want. 1
byzantium Posted October 15 Posted October 15 There is no need for anyone to really use slurs unless you are trying to convey a prejudicial message. That said, I think it would be incredibly homophobic for Taylor to not include the homophobic version of Picture to Burn on the Debut TV. 1

Whenever I song along to one of those songs, I always substitute it with "mister" It's kinda awkward but it's what I felt fits best lol 1

nsst Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Honestly, as a non-native speaker, it just doesn't hit me the same. I think a lot of the reactions to slurs in songs are super tied to cultural context idk
