ATRL we need to talk about M.I.A, what happened?

She has a similar approach to Lana, you know? Pretends to be effortlessly cool with her music but is somehow a bigot underneath. M.I.A. lost her way a long time ago, and a lot of that comes down to her PR.

This girl I was friends with is her biggest fan and hosted a screening of her documentary. She went down the conspiracy rabbit hole too and she was SO convinced of this outlandish bullshit and I distanced myself because of it (among other reasons) :deadbanana4:

M.I.A. is so stupid and she is influencing others with her idiocy, she needs to be held accountable

She reminds me of Joshua Bassett who became a "born again christian" once he took drugs and "saw jesus" but then said it "wasn't because of the drugs, it was really jesus" :dies:

She's always been like this, she just used to have better PR

lowkey agree with this but i think in the past the rabbit holes she chose just had better outcomes and were a bit more grounded.

MIA and Grimes are such letdown, considering their insane talents.

Oh welp, lemme go stream Bad Girls for the million-th time.

She shook the status-quo, brought attention to conflicts that the average Westerner was not aware of, uplifted the voices of underrepresented people and spoke about things that later happened to be true (Wikileaks). Heck, she was refused a VISA to enter the US because she referenced the PLO in Sunshowers and because her dad is a terrorist (or freedom fighter, whichever you choose). I think this ostracisation and general racism in the industry (especially for a South Asian woman) pushed her to the extreme.

It's sad because she's never really gotten her flowers and she's actually tarnishing her legacy and what made her a fresh and unique voice. Her music might not be everyone's cup of tea but I admire (and will continue to do) the fact that she was not afraid to speak up on controversial things. Songs like Paper Planes, Borders, POWA, and not to mention the whole MAYA album which was a precursor of hyperpop-adjacent music and sonically similar to The Money Store by Death Grips which came out a couple of years later. She was ridiculed and misunderstood, and the Super Bowl middle finger fiasco was the final nail in the coffin. And of course that was overtly exaggerated.

Watch her come out as a Zionist. I wouldn't be surprised.
