Lover Posted October 12 Posted October 12 (edited) she'll be 90 tomorrow. from a recent iview in germany: https://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.de/kultur/musik/nach-madonna-die-erfolgreichste-saengerin-der-welt-nana-mouskouri-wird-90-art-1011907 With 300 million records sold, she is the most successful singer in the world after Madonna. Over 300 gold, platinum and diamond records document Mouskouri's decades of success. This Sunday Nana Mouskouri turns ninety. Did you have a recipe for reaching old age? Yes, I always set goals for myself. And I never stopped working. Discipline has been extremely important throughout my life. That was already the case when I studied singing, piano and harmony at the Athens Conservatory and sang in a jazz band in my free time. This is how I got through good times and difficult times. Now I'm here, 90 years old, and everyone asks me how I'm going to celebrate. Did you have a favorite singer when you were young? I adored Marlene Dietrich: "I'm prepared for love from head to toe..." Fantastic! Have you ever met Marlene Dietrich? Yes, in Paris, in the early 1970s. She played one of her last concerts at L'Espace Pierre Cardin. Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Delon: We were all waiting for them in front of their dressing room. I didn't expect her to know me, but then she saw me and said, "How do you sing so beautifully?" I was so happy that I cried. Your admiration has meant an incredible amount to me throughout my life. It is said that you have recorded 134 albums and more than 1600 songs. At least. There could have been more. I have produced many songs in numerous different languages. In 1962, just a year after "White Roses from Athens", you moved to the USA and worked with Quincy Jones. They recorded the record "Nana Mouskouri in New York - The Girl From Greece Sings" in New York. I sang in English for the first time. It was a tremendous honor for me to work with Quincy. He's still a good friend to this day and I'm so glad he's still here. I have always really enjoyed singing in these different languages. I also recorded songs in Japanese. happy birthday greek goddess Edited October 12 by Lover 1 1
Sheep Posted October 12 Posted October 12 (edited) If she sold 300m records then Lady Gaga passed The Beatles with Dawn of Chromatica. Actual estimates put her around 60m which is still impressive but lbr. Her team claims everything from 250m to 400m sales, the gap between those estimates is nearly the size of Taylor Swift's career, not exactly a rounding error. Edited October 12 by Sheep 1 1 2
suburbannature Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Now you know she didn't sell anything close to that
Initials Posted October 12 Posted October 12 (edited) If you had straight hair and black glasses as a young woman in France, you would be called Nana Mouskouri every day for decades back in the day.🤓 Edited October 12 by Initials 1
Pendulum Posted October 12 Posted October 12 I've always found that claim ludicrous especially since she's not a household name and her fanbase consists of gays listening to other artists like Mylene Farmer, Fairuz and so on. Take away her success, triple it and give it to the actual Greek legend Vicky Leandros.

Nana Mouskouri is Internet famous in the U.S. because some ATRL gays thought she really was #2 for record sales in the world.

In fact she just released "happy birthday, nana" in celebration of her 90th birthday. Another best seller, no doubt

Another best seller, no doubt That doesn't mean much when most of those albums were regional variants and weren't selling much. She's achieved very few certifications and her known sales haven't even hit 10M units yet. https://bestsellingalbums.org/artist/9336

stevyy Posted October 13 Posted October 13 It's facts based. Now 2 news media outlets have reported this number in celebration of Nana's birthday. 300 million units sold seems to be a legit number (because it is now verified by 2 independent sources).

The issue is that even though 2 sources put her that high, hundreds of other sources don't put her anywhere near the top selling female artists. This includes sources such as Guiness World Records. Her team has also given wildly different numbers for her record sales, she never made it huge in key markets such as USA and even with hundreds of albums, 99% of those 300 million record sales are not reflected in certifications.
