GoodGuyGoneGhetto Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Which of the following Major Pop Stars had the more surprising/shocking downfall from their peak? I've decided to rank their three biggest albums alongside each-other to showcase the decline in commercial prowess. With Lauper and Abdul, the three albums shown are (coincidentally) their first three albums whereas "Teenage Dream" is Perry's sophomore album. CYNDI LAUPER. She's So Unusual. 7x Platinum U.S / 13M+ units sold WW. True Colors. 3x Platinum U.S / 7M+ units sold WW. A Night To Remember. 1x Platinum U.S / 2M+ units sold WW. No album since has scanned platinum in the U.S. PAULA ABDUL. Forever Your Girl. 7x Platinum U.S / 12M+ units sold WW. Spellbound. 3x Platinum U.S / 7M+ units sold WW. Head Over Heels. Gold U.S / 3M+ units sold WW. KATY PERRY. Teenage Dream. Diamond U.S / 6.9M units sold WW. (27.8M SPS WW) PRISM. 5x Platinum U.S / 4.5M units sold WW. (14.7M SPS WW) Witness. Gold U.S / 1M units sold WW. (2.9M SPS WW). BONUS. Smile. Silver U.S / 1M SPS WW. 143. N/A U.S / N/A WW.
A-V-XYZ Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Katy; she's never going to win a Grammy now based on how hard she fell. The other 2 at least won Grammys. 5 3
Popular Post PoisonedIvy Posted October 12 Popular Post Posted October 12 Oh suddenly ATRL is full of archaeologists with endless knowledge about fossils. Please. 15

(15.2m SPS WW) A Star Is Born. 2x Platinum U.S / 3.2m units sold WW. (10.8m SPS WW) As you can see from the numbers, you're a pressed liar and/or suffering from hysterical delusions, just like every other OGH. Gaga's 3rd biggest album is nearly 4x bigger than Katy's, and still managed to move more pure albums than Cyndi or Paula, despite being a streaming-era release. If we split up TF and TFM, she only looks even more stable. I get it must sting that you chose to be on the wrong side of history with Ms. Germ but speaking to a therapist about your Lady Gaga fixation will do you more good than spreading lies about her on a forum. discosean Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Katy's is the most shocking and strange. Cyndi continued to make music but it was not as commercial and was not really angling for such. But she remained booked and busy. Paula pivoted towards American Idol. 1
Mitsouko Posted October 12 Posted October 12 None of these were shocking. Bombing after a couple hit eras was kinda the norm for women in pop. That's why Madonna is the GOAT. 7 1
MESSIAH13 Posted October 12 Posted October 12 True Colours is actually 2x Platinum and A Night To Remember is Gold ( 500k). OT: It's between Cyndi and Paula. Katy had 3 huge eras, unlike the others who had only one. 1
itshyolee Posted October 12 Posted October 12 I feel like Katy shouldn't be grouped in with Cyndi and Paula tbh. Her time as a MPG managed to last 7 years while the other two barely made it to 5 1
unclefloprry Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Welp at least Katy has touring demand unlike the other 2.
Nightingale Posted October 12 Posted October 12 ATRL does too much on Katy's decline. It's not that bad a the OP is missing OOTB. Paula's is one of the worst. She went from having one of the biggest albums of all time to barely having any hits the next album. Katy and Cyndi are at least able to tour but Paula's music has been largely forgetten. She's mostly seen as an American Idol judge nowadays 1 1
LittleStarmen Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Cindy = cant write hit songs Paula = cant sing Katy = cant sing or write hit songd without dr luke 1
knewbetterpt2 Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Paula was being scouted by the Jackson's and choreographing their videos and tours before her debut album came out (which was the original chart record breaker and smasher back then). She was one of the masterminds behind Janet Jackson's enormous breakthrough in the 80's. Cyndi and Katy aren't sitting within 100ft of Paula's dinner table imo.

ACaseOfBlues Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Cyndi is easily the most talented of the three, and if any of them could've managed to write and produce a comeback hit on their own, it would've been her. So my vote goes to Cyndi.
Obsession Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Cyndi because she actually made an excellent album afterwards (Bring Ya To the Brink) 1

terrijoe Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Katy. Bc she had like record number one singles. Only actually talented icons do those numbers but she faded into irrelevance. Truly impressive she managed so many #1s while remaining very untalented and sharing those record single number 1s with legends like MJ, Mariah, Whitney the Beatles etc.
