Did "Shallow" save Lady Gaga from a Katy like decline?

Recommended Posts

Both debuted around 2008

Katy found her footing in the 2010s (Teenage Dream and Prism) which were bigger than BTW and Artpop

Joanne was her Witness and both were kind of on par with each other

After Witness, Katy had a -80% decline to Smile while Gaga had her biggest peak since BTW with "A Star is Born"

Thoughts?

First it was Bradley, then Ariana and now Bruno. But I have a feeling I'm forgetting someone.

I pity GaGa's assistant so many birthday cards and thank you notes to send all year:noparty:

Before Shallow, there was Million Reasons, which outsold and outstreamed every Katy single since 2014.

Did It make the year end chart though? And 2 weeks in the top 20?

but if the song was awful it wouldn't matter

like the VMAs and Rock In Rio performances didn't help Katy score some hits even though she sang some songs from 143 there

The superbowl really saved her. Then Bradley, Ariana, and Bruno kept her afloat. I wonder who the LG7 lead will feature?

There's no denying that A Star Is Born in general gave her career a MUCH needed boost. That said, I dont think she'd ever be in a Katy like situation. A big part of Katy's decline is ppl genuinely viewing her as talentless, something that Gaga never truly suffered from especially after her superbowl and oscar sound of music performance.

Did people not think that Gaga was talentless pre-ARTPOP? The Sound of Music performance was the first time the GP ever knew she could actually sing without gimmics

no she always had obvious talent, Katy didn't/doesn't

that's what I'm saying. There was some doubt about her talent from the GP before (though even then ppl just thought she was crazy or pretentious which is still a better place to be in than to be viewed as talentless) and then when she did the sound of music and the superbowl it completely removed any doubt from the GP

Oh come on, don't be a fool!! When did anyone think Gaga was talentless? Yes, the sound of music brought her more respect because it was the first time she took a step back from outrageous performances, but I doubt anyone thought she couldn't sing pre artpop.

It's 2024 and the obsession with these 2 feels like we went back a decade. Joanne outsold Witness in this country alone than what Witness did WW. She was averaging millions a night during JWT and Katy not even a single million. Shallow was so big it was just overkill tho. She could have faded completely after that as far as new releases and that song alone would keep her afloat for years to come.

Shallow did not save her from a katy trajectory because Gaga can actually create music people can relate to so she was always going to recover from Artpop! She proved it with the oscars, with the superbowl, with tony, with a star is born and with chromatica ball!

Well, Did Gaga ever have a decline though? She always ends up in Top 5 or #1 every time she releases a new single.
