l3disko Posted October 7 Posted October 7 Pink Friday? I guess if Ava Max was black she'd make it on the list too. 1

Slap Posted October 7 Posted October 7 (edited) Seeing Pink Friday on a list with Rhythm Nation? Oh my. Also self titled? Really? When you have BDay, DiL and 4 to choose from? I can't abide. They have Migos and no Janelle Monae??? Edited October 7 by Slap
Achilles. Posted October 7 Posted October 7 The first line of the article talking about the significance of black talent in all genres, but they couldn't find a slot for Tracy Chapman, one of the most beloved, acclaimed, and enduring records by a black artist on the country-folk-rock side of music. 3
Moonlight Nation Posted October 7 Posted October 7 (edited) I know it's technically a mixtape (with more cohesion, storytelling, and immersiveness than many albums), but it really annoys me to see The Weeknd's "House Of Balloons" consistently ignored in these lists while Drake's "Take Care" gets the credit being inspired by the "Trilogy" mixtapes (including having direct contributions from Abel himself). We saw this with the Rolling Stone 500 Best Albums list, most Best Of 2010s lists, the Apple Music list... It just rubs me the wrong way. Otherwise, this seems like a solid and acceptable effort of highlighting essential and impactful albums by black artists. Janelle Monaé and Tracy Chapman were indeed snubbed, though. I was also surprised that Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone were nowhere to be found, unless they don't count as part of the modern era. And yeah, it would have been important to see at least a few underground rap albums getting a mention. Edited October 7 by Moonlight Nation 2

I guess you take what you get I'd have gone Order In The Court for Queen Latifah. I love that album. Pink Friday Hard Core Another list excluding Foxy. Broken Silence deserves. 1

Lauryn Hill is RIGHT THERE and her ONE album will always be considered more impactful than Pink Friday or any other Nicki-related mess. I said SIGN not sing. New female rappers weren't getting signed like that until after PF success, really PFRR.

That opinion would be correct. Female rap was very much in a state of false starts for actual albums and not a whole lot of interest outside of the odd "alternative" artist.
