Are we heading into an anti-celebrity era?

Recommended Posts

I feel so many people are fed up with celebrity culture. People really used to kiss their feet 10-15 years ago, but now, there's so much about them getting dragged for being attention wh0res, out of touch, too wealthy, too entitled, avoid any type of consequences for their actions. Among all of this Diddy/Epstein/Metoo/Dan Schnieder mess, I see so many hope for "Hollywood to fall", people are really thirsty for these people to be humbled down to Earth again.

Combined with that, because of social media, everyone is pretty much a celebrity or public figure these days. Everyone is begging for attention online 24/7. And more backlash against wealthy people in general, as many are struggling with money, debt, housing, wages, job security, etc. while they live in excess and luxury.

Will we head into more severe anti-Celebrity times, or will we love them again ?

Maybe it's stupid to ask a place filled with delulu stans

No, celebrity worship is bigger than ever and celebrities are making more money than they ever did.

Olivia Rodrigo who isn't even a household name is on a tour which will approximately gross 200-250M, this was a number exclusive to world-class superstars a decade ago

TikTok stars are earning 15-20m salaries per year

It's just we're hearing a lot of noise from people jealous of celebrities because they're broke and ugly

No. There will always be certain pockets of audiences who lick feet for each field.

But the attention spam is drastically reduced thanks to social media.

Yes, the "respect" for certain kinds of celebrities is in decline.

You don't even need a talent or charisma these days to have a headline or TikToks about you. Just a scandal.

Recently everyone was talking about that Rose girl who killed her mum.

There were so many headlines about the female cop who had sex with half of the police station.

We had a twink who got boned in the Senate Room. Yes, they are not "celebrities" but they could capitalise on that like the Kardashians and become famous.

Criminals like Diddy will always have their **** hit the fan, let's not for one second compare this to celebrity culture.

I think that we are all becoming more media literate and are craving more real and authentic people.

We are all becoming more aware of the tired shock ploys, marketing strategies, etc. I think now we are just craving substance

Interesting topic to approach we are nothing to the masses anymore :gaycat6:

they now worship small influencers to keep up with the ever changing attention span of Gen Z - lower.

There will be no more MJ's, Madonna's, Gaga's, Nicki's, Beyoncé's.

They know this.

Ariana is the last truly worshipped celebrity for my generation :lakitu:

They worship us small scale influencers with small sized cults. It gives McDonald's/Wendy's quality but the amount of micro celebrities have boosted over 800% over the last decade.

The CIA and MK Ultra takes note and advantage of that :suburban:

I'm mixed about this tbh

on one hand it does feel like the sensationalism is dying down in terms of specific iconic moments (I mean… everything surrounding Britney in 2007, nothing on that level has been replicated in a sensationalistic sense by the newer pop girls, ditto with the grand scale of the Taylor/Kanye moment… but at the same time there's also stuff to be said about how a GREAT majority of these now iconic moments were negative in nature), but on the other hand stan culture is driving overall celebrity culture to new toxic heights. people will turn their heads immediately, regardless of what they prefer to listen to, if, say, something drops about a celebrity marrying a trump fan, or if someone is commenting on someone's tiktoks about their ex or that kinda vibe. social media has accentuated a sort of universal ADHD where people are always hunting for a small tidbit that'll shock them. new heights of obsession, but shorter lasting obsession unless you're a stan yourself :matty:

Good question.

The celebrity world gives off a dark energy, I'm not interested in stanning anyone anymore.

I was probably too naive as a teen but now all of it looks bad.

Aren't we all waiting the see who's on those Diddy tapes ?

Are people going to be disgusted enough to stop worshipping false idols ?

I don't think this is true?

In the 2000's I am pretty sure you would just go to a forum dedicated tp your favorite person, any hate will get you banned from a forum.

You go on those websites that updated music sale news in the early 2010's, and I felt they were less civil that the Twitter of today.

Back in the early 2010's I remember there being death threats in the comments section, and the same with Twitter.

People always talk about "Don't mess with the Swifties," but yet, I can only visualize the Swifties as people who are shy in real life. I felt like the Little Monsters and Smilers were more violent.

In way yes and no. Celebrity culture too me just seems to become more toxic or idk if this is a sign for me to grow up. But I just feel like I can't really stan anyone anymore. Because at the end of the day celebrities just seem like normal humans too me.

Until there is a downfall of Taylor Allison Swift then no. The only mass anti celebrity hate train is towards the Kardashians/women with little to no talent that are popular for their looks. The same people who act like they hate famous people worship some old head lead singer of a rock band or a rapper with odd behavior, especially the dead ones. The same people will fall head over heels over actors and actresses because they're not as in your face as singers/entertainers/influencers.

The definition of celeb is changing. Teens now run after Twitch streamers in the streets.

No. It's just that there are new celebrities who are Twitchers, streamers, and irrelevant influencers on TikTok who will be forgotten in five years or so. Luckily the likes of Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and hopefully others are saving this generation from the social media ''celebrity''

And this

And this too.

Mainstream media/TV/film/social media celebrity worship is still present in pop culture.

But at the same time it has reduced due to the moreover increased awareness of the abuse adults and children who live/lived lives of fame go/went through (the Britney conservatorship, countless child stars, women, men, gender-non-conforming individuals) and the abuse, torture, and harrassment many of the BIG celebs put on other people and misuse/abuse of power they did to get to the level of fame/status/wealth. And the way there's so many stories of now and from back in the day in regard to this matter that took off the rose colored lenses (Miley reference) people had of show business.

Also obviously the other major factors are the celebrities' excessive wealth, many celebrities' narcissicism, behaviours, perception, the "death" of "flex culture" that still exists but was very prominent till maybe the mid or late 2010s, unfortunate events/matters among fandoms, rabid fans, and people just switching to something that is not about dedicating a huge part of (or completely) yourself and your energy to someone who will likely never know you.

I think it's just changing. Celebrities are less famous than they were 20 or 30 years ago because we don't live in a monoculture anymore. There are very few bonafide stop-the-traffic superstars anymore.

That's good in a way, the internet has really democratized things and people can choose from more options. There aren't the events that everybody watched in unison which made celebrities extremely famous to every person. So nobody now is as famous as Michael Jackson or Madonna was. No actor now is at the level of superstar that Julia Roberts was in the 90s.

So I wouldn't say it's anti-celebrity, it's just different.

Tbh Gen z just hates the older celebs, and they have their own set. They follow influencers, younger popstars and youtubers.

Gen Z is also the poorest generation so they easily get triggered when celeb people 30+ are making billions and they are struggling to get by
