When did looks stop mattering for pop stars?

Back in the day, it was nearly impossible to be successful without having good looks that went along with your talent.

With the rise of artists like Lorde, Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, and Post Malone, though, it seems like looks no longer are of any importance.

When did looks stop mattering? :celestial5:

Ultimately, yes it is a good thing that nowadays people are more open to people's looks being varied than the disgusting (and plain boring!) of the usual traditional beauty standards.

Hmmmmm. It still very much prominent in the industry. Most pop starts that break into the mainstream world are somehow beautiful. For men, it never really mattered.

the biggest artists in the world are still good looking. But looks never mattered that much for men, anyway.

Gaga is actually a very pretty woman. Yes I said what I said, and no one quote me with a normal picture of her!

Are you a fan of singers or models? I don't follow…

I didn't say I agree looks matter, I'm saying there's been a shift in attitudes towards looks in the industry, which is a good thing.

Not every post is shady

When people realized they can put on Halloween costumes in to shock and still be famous. Then it allowed for other changes like plastic surgery/fillers/1 foot heels to feel pretty.

But the pressure is still there, they'll never get rid of beauty standards.

Are we supposed to pretend you just threw out some names trying NOT to shade them?

-it never mattered much for men, or nearly as much as it does for women

-it still matters, probably more now than in the 80s or 90s, though an obsession with/stress on appearance may have peaked in the early 2000s
