Obviously only they know, but she wrote a book in the form of a novel, except she basically confirmed that it's a retelling of her own story with the names changed. I read it and at points it's just straight up talking about Liam, 1D, his ex bandmates, etc. She even kept the initials in the names she changed whenever she could.

 

It's obviously to circumvent NDAs and shield herself from libel suits, but honestly? I tend to believe her. Just because I think it's very telling, he had two long term relationships before Maya (the one that wrote the book), Danielle Peazer, a dancer at the X Factor who he dated on and off from 2010 till 2013 and Sophia Smith, one of his former classmates who he dated from 2013 till 2015

Like I said, given the very credible abuse accusations, I don't have sympathy for him at all.
