Why did our Pop girls struggle to sell albums in 2024?

With so many quality albums released this year, it's crazy to see how everyone is struggling to have a decent-selling album. Outside of Taylor, SZA, and Sabrina, who just released and has already moved 1.2 million units, it's crazy to see that they all struggled to cross the 2 million mark, considering they released their albums months and months ago. Billie is getting there soon, of course, but still, it's taking its sweet time.

Sabrina sold a lot of albums for just being out for only a month.

What's the last pop album that felt ESSENTIAL or undeniably FRESH?

Selling 2M within a year isn't as easy as Taylor makes it seem

All of the albums besides Taylor's TTPD had pre-released songs prior to its release. Billie's 10 tracks album doesn't, 4 months with over 1.55m units is not a struggle by any means.

Consumption is just done and measured differently now. We're probably never going to see a The Fame/Monster or a Teenage Dream sized album cycle in a more traditional sense in the future, which is ok. Taylor is the exception, not the rule.

Is this a real question or a "let's all look at Taylor's numbers" thread :celestial5:

The way TTPD sold more than the next 4 best sellers combined… :jonny5:

It's the streaming era, it now takes longer to accumulate units and reach a higher unit count than it did in the physical/digital era.

Taylor skews the perception with her massive success and by selling as if it were the 90s or 2000s again, but she's the exception to the rule. Many of the other albums in the OP will certainly reach double, triple, perhaps even quadruple platinum status eventually… it'll just take them some time.

Everyone already knows Taylor numbers, even her haters. So it's a real question, by default.

Album sales are dead unless you're Taylor Swift. Those are all good numbers for the streaming era. Taylor has just warped people's expectations for a successful album

I don't think TRaFoaMP is really anything special though.

Everyone isn't going to move millions and millions of units.

I just checked, the only people to cross 2M equivalents this year is Swift and Wallen. lol.

To me it is special in the sense that it's one of the first pop girl albums that's centered around queer experiences without it feeling like a forced statement.

It's bold.

Unapologetic.

Playful and confident.

But it depends per person I guess

It's exactly that :gaycat6:

OT: Those are nice numbers. Sabrina's are really impressive and so are Billie's. And Beyoncé's as well.
