georgechxng Posted September 27 Posted September 27 (edited) I remember thinking she used to have the perfect voice for pop music back in the early days of her career but her voice changed so much over the course of the years (which is not a bad thing since it allowed her to explore new stuff as well). I didn't really follow her every step but can the little monsters pinpoint to when exactly this change to a heavier sound started to happen? I've been curious about it lately. ImpressMeMuch Posted September 27 Posted September 27 she sings different styles for different genres...? 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted September 27 Posted September 27 when you grow older your voice changes and matures as well
Cruel Summer Posted September 27 Posted September 27 In addition to natural processes like aging, stylistic choices, and vocal training, I think she's also mentioned that there was more manipulation on her voice on certain early records. She's still capable of a high head voice that's well-suited for certain pop sounds, but probably feels less like she has to rely on it, since it's clear that the public connects with her just as well when she's showing off a little bit more and utilizing deeper, stronger, and probably more comfortable parts of her voice. 5
Jude Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Born This Way era? But even during TFM era her voice got deeper. Ever since ARTPOP though, we got that Dope vocals.
justin. Posted September 27 Posted September 27 She got intense vocal training after Cheek to Cheek (before her Sound of Music tribute), which changed the way she sings. 2
Lady Claire Posted September 27 Posted September 27 (edited) She's a trained vocalist, you can't expect her doing the electropop vocals to jazz music And she got older, her voice matured. She wouldn't have her 22yo voice as a almost 40yo woman Edited September 27 by Lady Claire
Mikeymoonshine Posted September 27 Posted September 27 I don't think her voice has actually changed that much, like sure it's a little different due to her age but it's more than she shifted vocal styles over the years. I think Harlequin is possibly the best she's ever sounded but I wasn't always a huge fan of the way she sang around the time of Joanne I think since then her vocal style has gotten better. She also went through a whole era of not using her higher register very much but she's using it more again now. There's less autotune being used in her music too as someone else mentioned. 1
Digitalism Posted September 27 Posted September 27 It is an stylistic choice. It didn't change at all A horrible choice by the way. It's the reason she can only smash with ballads 1 1 2
Saint James Posted September 27 Posted September 27 her biggest tone and technique change was with Artpop. but as others have said her voice did not change much. she still has that bright head voice in Chromatica and ASIB.
Bones Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Probably the btwb tour she used to scream from the top of her lungs
Totami Legend Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Her voice was pitched to death on the early albums, TEOG sounds so weird 1
helpthomas Posted September 27 Posted September 27 idk about all the replies above flat out denying her voice changed quite drastically, because as a liddo since 2009 i absolutely noticed it along the way and my personal pin points are actually two specific years; first 2012 during the BTWB because she was straining her voice A LOT and it must've had some effect on the general timbre, which could be heard in her speaking tone as well. then something drastic happened around 2015 because in several comparison videos it's always around 2015 that her speaking voice dropped down to where it is today. she's obviously an aging human like anyone else but we have to remember she's had issues with drinking strong liquor and she's been smoking cigarettes for many years on and off. right now she claims to be sober from most of her vices and you can actually hear that improvement, you could already hear it during the Chromatica Ball and now on Harlequin where she's utilizing her different vocal styles and her "new" timbre/tone in amazing ways. 1
Princess Aurora Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Bad Romance was the song where her voice sounded completely different. I was like Similarly, Christina Aguilera had a similar effect after Genie In A Bottle. 2

Raphy23 Posted September 27 Posted September 27 It did not change, this video of her singing Poker Face in 2008. It got ever so slightly deeper. But as she got more famous she got more comfortable singing in the jazzy style that she grew up singing. 2 3
RandomHooker Posted September 27 Posted September 27 I prefer her natural voice. The sweet lighter voice during the Fame wasn't it. She can still outsing most of ATRL's faves anyways
BrokenMachine Posted September 27 Posted September 27 It's a stylistic choice she makes. She can still make the vocal tone like her early days, but she likes the other one better. And yeah, everything started around 2013, and after the backlash ARTPOP got that's when she mastered her singing so it sounds like a trained classical voice rather than a pop voice 1
Dante Posted September 27 Posted September 27 well her voice was already different on born this way compared to TF+TFM even bad romance differs quite a lot compared to TF
vuelve88 Posted September 27 Posted September 27 Her current voice always makes me think of Broadway musicals. It's very theatrical. It works well with ballads, though. 1
