ericcartman Posted September 25 Posted September 25 (edited) When The Gift debuted top 2 but not #1 with 54k, ATRL went in on Beyonce. The Gift situation bares a lot of similarities to the upcoming Harlequin project by Lady Gaga. Both are specialty side projects (but not soundtrack) based on a big budget movie the artist starred in. Both have fairly inaccessible genres: afrobeats for The Gift, standards, jazz for Harlequin. While Harlequin is all Gaga for better or worse, The Gift did not feature Beyonce on every song (though admittedly it did feature other big names like Kendrick and Childish Gambino). One would expect Harlequin to open to a similar commercial and critical reception. Will ATRL celebrate that? Or will Gaga go through similar lashings? Edited September 25 by ericcartman
Nico Robin Posted September 25 Posted September 25 (edited) Didnt they say on that album top 2 but we aint number 2 or whatever…? They kinda had it coming Edit: i confused it with another song, I think it was I'm The One Edited September 25 by Nico Robin 2 1
Big Bad Wolf Posted September 25 Posted September 25 No, it won't flop as hard. Beyoncé is chart poison. 1 1 7
Popboi. Posted September 25 Posted September 25 (edited) Gaga would be blocked by Sabrina, one of the biggest artists of the year, THE GIFT was blocked by Ed Sheeran's quick little collabs album. Edit: Got THE GIFT and THE CARTERS confused for a second. Edited September 25 by Popboi.
Digitalism Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Yes, it will flop as hard. Gaga is chart poison 1 1 9

Pikachoo Posted September 25 Posted September 25 (edited) no because Gaga doesn't brag about being the queen, being perfect, being an untouchable goddess, bragging about chart positions (top 2 but i aint 2). in fact she does the opposite. maybe if Beyonce learned some humility she wouldn't have been clowned for The Grift. Hunter_13 Posted September 25 Posted September 25 No cause Gaga doesn't present herself as an untouchable goddess that must be worshiped by all or be blacklisted from the industry!!! She's a humble queen that spreads love and kindness. 7 6 1 8
Laura Palmer Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Probably unless they've found employment by then 4

Illuminati Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Harlequin is just a covers album but that didn't stop the OGHs from coming for LFS and C2C so I'm sure they will

swissman Posted September 25 Posted September 25 The answer is ATRL will absolutely ALWAYS take any chance they can get to shade, deride or demean an artist. That said, though there are similarities, there are also differences. Harlequin may not be an OST, but as far as the tracklist goes it seems that about half the songs are also featured in the film which does serve as a more direct form of promotion than The Gift ever had with The Lion King's poorly edited-in ~45 seconds of Spirit (the only song on The Gift that appeared in the film). But ATRL is wildly inconsistent with their shade unless it benefits them. Ariana, for example, got barely any lasting lashings for The Charlie's Angels Soundtrack flopping harder than The Gift. So the answer is ATRL will do what they always do: be messy, immature and illogical. 3 2

Sannie Posted September 25 Posted September 25 No, because Harlequin is a legitimate extension of the movie and puts art and the movie at the forefront. The Gift is just Jay Z and Beyonce bragging about being rich and famous. 1 3
itshyolee Posted September 25 Posted September 25 And just like I predicted, a certain demographic is already in this thread dragging Bey.
sunbathinganimal Posted September 25 Posted September 25 The Gift is kinda one of Bey's best projects tbh, I wouldn't expect an album of reimagined covers to do as well either critically or commercially 2

Beyoncé's references to being a queen is the same female empowerment she's been promoting since her early Destiny's Child days and follow in the footsteps of hip-hop's longstanding use of braggadocio, a type of boasting that is not always about thinking you're better but exemplifying how far you've come. It's self-empowerment but also served to listeners to sing and chant along with. To take it literally as she as a person thinking she lords over everyone else on earth sounds like projecting your feelings onto her. That would be like saying "Lady Gaga" means she thinks she's nobility because she's calling herself "Lady". Your desire to "humble" Beyoncé is weird. You cite a lyric about a chart position referencing how she broke the internet and take that as some gospel for how she feels always, and yet here's just two lyrics she's sung that negate everything you've said: "Perfection is a disease of a nation", Pretty Hurts I'm a host of imperfection ... "I'm a peasant by some standards, But in your eyes I'm a queen", Flaws & All 2
