Alaska. Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Crazy to think 3 of the most influential pop artists were at their artistic peak so close to each other Will we ever have another quality trinity release like that? Have we gotten close to it yet? 14
taylamour Posted September 24 Posted September 24 These albums shaped the first few months I had a drivers license. 2
AxelFox Posted September 24 Posted September 24 There was something in the air in 97/98. Music has not been as good since. 2

Janet Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I think it has something to do with me being born that year. my impact. 3
Mocha Posted September 24 Posted September 24 (edited) i hate to be a grandpa but MPG don't do it like them anymore i fear Edited September 24 by Mocha 5 1
Madaboutmusic Posted September 24 Posted September 24 A holy trinity. All three of them set the standard for peaking artistically well beyond years of significant commercial success. Legends only. 3 1
Blackout2006 Posted September 24 Posted September 24 There truly was something else about the mid-late 1990s (1995-1998). A very peculiar and once-in-a-lifetime phase in music.
JoeAg Posted September 24 Posted September 24 that's three incredible classics within 5 months lest we forget that within those five months, there were also the releases of The Lonesome Crowded West, Homogenic, Impossible Princess, Dots & Loops, and Portishead's self-titled album there was something in the air back then for sure 5
The7thStranger Posted September 24 Posted September 24 This is what's missing from the pop landscape today. The most recent class of mainstream pop stars aren't really evolving or going out on (musically) creative limbs anymore. And the ones who do, sadly, don't have the talent to pull it off. 3

Worth noting these are all these artists 4th-7th albums. The recent class is really just getting started. 4th/5th albums tend to be an artistic turning point for most pop acts.

mons†er Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Also 'Share My World' by Mary J. Blige was released in 1997 as well which is one of the greatest R&B albums of all time. 1997 was truly the year of artistic expression and honesty through music. The new crop of artists aren't that innovative or forward thinking IMO. 3 1

Trent W Posted September 24 Posted September 24 (edited) Everyone saying there was something in the air in the 90s aint lying My time were the 00s, 2010s and 2020s partly but the music in the 80s and 90s was just on a whole other level Edited September 24 by Trent W 1
dumbsparce Posted September 24 Posted September 24 The 2024 loose equivalents to these legendary albums being HMHAS, Brat and Short N Sweet Downgrade is an understatement 1

And obviously, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill came in 1998. Crazy. 4
izebize Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Also the fact that all 3 were their 7th albums and their career best to this day 1
°ColdFire° Posted September 24 Posted September 24 And let's not forget Impossible Princess that was released in October 1997. I am not sure what were they using during that time, but the absolute slayage. 5
ithinkheknowsoutsold Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I can't help but think the music landscape of the time was heavily influenced by the Lilith Fair scene. 1
Likingstars Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I think the closest we ever got to this again was back in 2016 the slayage 1
