nostalgia Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Stan Twitter and ATRL have suddenly started rallying behind Demi Moore's performance in The Substance, pushing her ahead of previous favorite Angelina Jolie in Maria. Just last month, everyone was pitting Gaga and Angie against each other for the Best Actress Oscar, but things have taken a turn. The Substance blew up on Twitter, sparking conversations around ageism and misogyny, and Demi's performance hit a nerve with a lot of people. Now, the gheys and Film Twitter seem to be fully behind her, praising her for delivering something raw and powerful. It's wild how quickly the narrative shifted, with Demi becoming a serious contender out of nowhere. But can she keep this momentum going all the way to Oscar night and actually win? 1

Reflektor Posted September 23 Posted September 23 It would be absolutely amazing if a film as disgusting and wild as The Substance got a nomination. Demi was fantastic, the scene where she is getting ready for her date is definitely award worthy. 2 3
Phaunzie Posted September 23 Posted September 23 It's a horror movie and gays love horror movies. So, no it is not a surprise. 1
Space Cowboy Posted September 23 Posted September 23 People are tired of lame biopics getting always award recognition over way better and more interesting films. 8 1
NoOneDiesFromLove Posted September 23 Posted September 23 For what she's been through and she's still singing 1
ICLDXU4HS Posted September 23 Posted September 23 A better performance than any performance the other woman has ever put in! 1 2

alfonso12 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Maybe cause we've seen Demi's performance in The Substance but we haven't seen Angie's in Maria Callas? it's not rocket science. 1
truthteller Posted September 23 Posted September 23 i really wish that the oscars will start recognising more performances in the horror / thriller genre 3

Nothing about a Larrain biopic is "lame" or generic. His Jackie Kennedy film was made like a psychological thriller, his Diana film was like a horror ghost story. Maria appears to be the weakest of the three, but he never makes cookie cutter biopics and has given the genre new life. 2

They're definitely not basic but Spencer was still interestingly bad At least Jackie was very good.

I know you're a Monster, but Spencer premiered at Venice with rave reviews including 7 100 scores. It still stayed at 76 on MC outside of the festival circuit. 1

I know, I still thought it was a shallow, thematically obvious misfire when I saw it and there's a reason none of the significant critical groups went for it in any meaningful way. It was a Venice fad 1 1 1

The more basic and middlebrow regionals supported the biopic whereas the significant highbrow groups mostly ignored it. And the mention it got at LA was as a runner-up for their music category.
Bends Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Today, my colleague and I discussed this film for an hour and a half and how it changes the perspective of realizing a woman's maturity and addiction to cosmetology.
