HardBambi Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Not basic at all, it's got the perfect punch! Taste is number 1 in the UK for the 5th week and you dare to call her music basic. I will tell you this in an Amy Winehouse voice: no no no! 1
Julia Fox Posted September 22 Posted September 22 12 minutes ago, Wicked said: This is literally a site for corporate pop acts who very, very rarely veer into anything challenging musically. These threads always kill me They are acting like Britney, Beyoncé, Rihanna or Gaga weren't doing pop music made for radio and the masses when they were at their peaks. That's literally what made them now do more challenging music and at the same time be less invested on promoting/releasing music. In fact, they are bitter because their faves aren't doing it like Sabrina nowadays, or they hate to see new pop girls succeed because they kind of feel old and can't stand not being into what's hot so they are stuck on that age. Its such weird how hated the new girls are on here, like they just demand that they have to be everything including trying to be like the girls they stanned in a very exact way. But in reality all of these girls are eating and succeeding in a way that they are loved by the Gen Z and for the first time in years they are making pop music on the front of the industry again. But hey, watch these girls getting dropped and then they start complaining about how male leaning the charts are with pure rap, hip hop and full of MOODs, Million Dollar Babies, Lose Controls and A Bar Songs. 1

Britney and Xtina would have scores that high too if they hadn't debuted in the late nineties when Pop females were panned to pieces for showing a little belly, or for doing Pop music alone. They lack cohesion, passion, versatility and lyricism into them. In The Zone and Blackout though are better so she has that at least. If only she sung and wrote all of those records by herself that would have been way more impressive but not everyone has the range to do so. 3 2

popmusicisdead Posted September 22 Posted September 22 yes it sounds like it was made for supermarket speakers. but this is sorta-kinda her debut era and maybe she'll pull a Stripped one day
Digitalism Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Imagine giving excuses and saying no It's super basic but there's nothing wrong with that. 1

glitch Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I really don't think Emails I Can't Send was basic at all actually. It was quite an introspective take on dating in your 20s and the fallout from a brief relationship. Short n Sweet is more formulaic for sure, but the music is still good imo, even if it's not exactly boundary pushing.
Luckitty Posted September 22 Posted September 22 it's very basic she's the definition of white mediocrity 1 1
Honeyßéy Posted September 22 Posted September 22 The singles she released are basic, however the songs that haven't been released as a single are far from basic. Let's not forget shes signed to a label, the "basic" songs are always the ones that become hits. Some of the biggest popstars have basic music as well (Gaga, Katy , Ariana) 1
burninredhot Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Yes (and it's ok cuz she just had her breakout moment) but this is a very ironic thread considering OP is a Britney stan 3
Bencharmer Posted September 22 Posted September 22 It sounds like Fleetwood Mac meeting One Direction with sassy lyrics it's a so unusual mix it's original enough to not be basic.
hawx23 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 (edited) I mean people keep saying she's Taylor's daughter (whatever that means) but there's a HUGE distance between Tay's musical output and Sabrina's. At 21/22 Taylor was doing Red, and then right after 1989. SNS is nowhere near those. It's like…galaxies away. Edited September 22 by hawx23 1
MasterExpose Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Nothing wrong with that. She'll be here for a fun time not a long time anyways
ATRL Moderator Ampersand13 Posted September 22 ATRL Moderator Posted September 22 I don't really agree. Singular (both acts) had quite a bit of sonic variety as did Emails. I don't see a lot of pop girls having an album that can make Emails (title track), Nonsense, and Things You Never Said sound cohesive and pull off a top to bottom strong effort. I mean even SNS has Taste, Sharpest Tool, Slim Pickins, and Don't Smile which embody her ability to work seamlessly in different soundscapes. Not to mention her distinct lyrical prowess (which I get is not for everyone but I personally love it). If her music is basic, what does that make her contemporaries'? I'd also like to add that she and her producers continue to find some fun or creative moments (modulating in PPP, the vocal layering in Lie to Girls, the glorious instrumental section in Juno) Most of our pop girls are all writing in 4/4 with similar/the same chord progressions and following tried and true conventions of historically commercial music. What I really appreciate about Sabrina is that, more often than not, she finds some way to inject personality throughout her material.
goverm3nth0ker Posted September 23 Posted September 23 i thought the same but short n sweet its growing on me, so no. lemme do nothing but stan

popularmoonlight Posted September 23 Posted September 23 There's a lot of personality in her music so I wouldn't call it basic. You can hear her evolution as an artist (if you've heard her past efforts) and you can hear her references which for 'pop' music is great already
