I think it's time for Katy to really consider whether she wants to be an artist or not.

She was never an artist. She was rather a puppet on a string.

Katy has mentioned a few times she's wanted to do an acoustic record. She's done an acoustic set several times for promoting albums and she sounds good.

so why hasn't she done it yet? part of having the range is knowing when to put out certain types of records. It's what separates artists like Taylor and Beyonce and Gaga from people like Katy - they know when to pivot and try something else based on commercial success, critical reception, and their own creativity. Take Folkmore for example: Taylor knew Lover was a failure (for her standards) so she pivoted sharply with Folklore and struck when the iron was hot. Beyonce recognized she had a strength for visuals so she worked hard on them for ST and Lemonade. Gaga knew her antics and persona had a higher profile than her music so she pivoted with Cheek to Cheek and the Sound of Music tribute to remind everyone of her talent.

Katy has had critical blunders forever -- why didn't she take the feedback from Witness and do something more serious (I think she was moving in the correct direction with NRO and HiH but something clearly happened. And what about after Smile? It's been 4 years since then and obviously she's busy being a mother, with idol etc but she had FOUR YEARS to make a good album and really take the feedback that she's been given throughout her career and THIS is what she has to show for it? a mess.

She needs a major revamp or something.

Honestly she needs to get dropped from Capitol and get a new team. Then she needs to do a "back to her roots" type record w Glen Ballard (who pushed her to be a great songwriter), Greg Wells and Butch Walker. Not quite a pop/folk slog ala folklore but more late 2000s indie singer/songwriter than trying to be Joni Mitchell. More like A Cup of Coffee and Ur So Gay (and she should get controversial w her lyrics again tbh).

Then she can experiment w a new producer and have a little Ray of Light moment. Something experimental that will bring her critical acclaim.
