Velvet Posted September 20 Posted September 20 The Times: Katy Perry: 143 review — horrors like Woman's World outnumber any highs Quote The pop star's first album since Smile in 2020 has some thrilling moments, but not enough to counteract her thuddingly basic numbers Katy Perry hasn't released an album since Smile in 2020 and in that time you would hazard a guess that she's been listening to some Dua Lipa. As Taylor Swift roars out of sight with her brand of stadium-sized confessionals, Lipa is now arguably Perry's biggest rival in the synth-pop-queen stakes, and the British star's Grammy-winning tales of impassive empowerment and escapist sensuality can't have gone unnoticed. https://www.thetimes.com/culture/music/article/katy-perry-143-review-horrors-like-womans-world-outnumber-any-highs-lkpj3hjv5 1

Bends Posted September 20 Author Posted September 20 Following this topic is like watching the Oscars or the Super Bowl, where instead of nominations there is another devastating review. My boyfriend bought nachos and reminded me that I'm a brainless fool because we have this album playing at home. 3
Lil Mistee Posted September 20 Posted September 20 Seems right but it's no worse than most of her peers latest outputs (except godsha) 1

I would be surprised if she even keeps her record deal after this. Yeah they need to drop her honestly. It's crazy this album was even cleared for release after the disaster of the previous two eras 1

QueenB Posted September 20 Posted September 20 the album is pretty mid, but 38 seems like theyre doing too much. I'd give this a low 60's/high 50's 1

Janet Posted September 20 Posted September 20 This is literally her worst album. I'm glad the critics agree.
Revel Posted September 20 Posted September 20 I listened to Artificial on the basis of @R.E.M.'s review and it really was so bad that I couldn't even finish the song. Honestly, if the rest of the album is of that standard then it really is the worst album of the year. Katy, you are really over with this release. 1

Brat right now: The difference is Brat has interesting, forward, and cool production, tackles the subject of being a woman in a way that's much more nuanced than a Kohl's commercial empowerment soundtrack from 2010, has an actual point of view, doesn't sound AI-generated, wasn't an obvious attempt at getting a hit. I do think some of the dogpiling has been a bit intense. 38 is a bit much I agree, would've probably put it in the 50s, but let's not go crazy. 6 16
Popular Post Almighty Gaga Posted September 20 Popular Post Posted September 20 I screenshot the MC score and asked ChatGPT to join in on the fun and provide a fitting review Katy Perry's "143" is an auditory catastrophe of the highest order. This album isn't just a misstep—it's a full-on plunge into an abyss of mediocrity, proving once and for all that musical evolution is as foreign to Perry as subtlety. From the very first note, "143" feels like a relentless assault on the senses, as if it were engineered specifically to test the limits of one's tolerance for abysmal songwriting. Let's talk about the lyrics, or rather, the collection of Hallmark-card rejects strung together in a desperate attempt to pass as emotional depth. If "143" was a person, it'd be that one friend who thinks sending "I luv u" over text is a grand gesture. The album's themes, a rehash of overdone love songs, are so hollow that they make elevator music seem profound in comparison. Perry sings about heartbreak and self-discovery like she's reading from a script written by a bored intern who Googled "emotions" for inspiration. Musically, "143" is a joke, and not a funny one. It's like the ghost of "Teenage Dream" has come back to haunt us, but instead of a fun throwback, we're subjected to a Frankenstein's monster of recycled beats and lazy production. Perry's once-vibrant sound is now reduced to a generic, soulless churn of overproduced tracks that scream "radio filler" louder than any actual lyric. Each song blends into the next with the grace of a car crash, leaving you begging for it to end long before it mercifully does. Vocally, Perry's performance is lackluster at best, bordering on intolerable at worst. The autotune is doing the heavy lifting here, and even that seems to be giving up halfway through. She sounds bored—like even she's tired of listening to herself. And frankly, who can blame her? "143" is not just Katy Perry's worst album—it's a public service announcement on how not to make music. Zero out of 100 isn't a score. It's a mercy. 54
