Times when artists stopped themselves from being great?

The title.

Idk what Bey was thinking when she decided to release Lemonade exclusively through TIDAL. This decision definitely hindered the album's commercial success a bit since it could've received more streaming units and chart way longer on the BB200:gaycat7:

Honestly Taylor with TTPD, I wish she edited the tracklist with the more stellar tracks on The Anthology

Beyoncé not releasing any visuals for Renaissance and Cowboy Carter. Like, the concept of dropping an album with no visuals was kinda cute and original at first, but then when it became apparent no visuals were actually coming at all, it stunted the era's longevity and engagement.

Britney by the end of In the Zone era might be the prime example of that. If you read her autobiography you can get an idea of how done she was with everything. She basically manifested the injury that took her dancing skills away.

Rihanna retiring

Bieber's breaks between Believe - Purpose, Purpose - Changes, and Justice - now. His unwillingness to keep giving us POP SMASHES is also disheartening. He'll come back with a random R&B or Christian single again :flower:

These replies are already dumb as hell lol. OP, I thought this thread would be about artists that never made it to permanent A-List or could've been bigger/better had x, y, z happened/not happened. Not y'all naming legends and icons who were already considered great by the masses prior to whatever misstep you think they took. Obviously, it didn't hinder their journey.

A serious and obvious answer, Azealia Banks.
