Kanes
One smash album/era and you're an MPG on ATRL these days. Did the standards for MPG-status lower?
Saintlor
Yeah it's crazy because the benchmarks were so high for Ariana Grande to be considered a MPG on here. People didn't consider her one until she was successful for like 9 years. Now you can have success for 1 or 2 songs and a couple of months of tiktok virality and people consider you one

AshleyLovescats887
I feel like we didn't get any major debuts for the past ~3 years so whenever a new girlie gets a few hits, people rush to call her an MPG as they want SOMEONE to fill in the MPG void.
Badgalbriel
That's because we would have no new mpg at all recently
Forever Winter
Yes and that's because we had to. There are little to no superstars in this new music landscape

Klein
Well that's because otherwise, the only one who emerged this decade so far would be Olivia. And we're already halfway through the decade. Edited September 8 by Klein
MonsterNavy
like... Sabrina Carpenter being compared to Gaga, Taylor, Beyoncé, Rihanna etc and even Katy like... 5 massively autoplay'd payola botted songs = main pop girl? sabrina is not even close to olivia and billie she's the new Meghan Trainor, Zara Larsson, Ava Max level of faceless pop girl 1 1
Orsay
Well yes, because the girls just aren't giving what they were giving 10-15 years ago lbr also it's just a matter of the GP/gen z shying away from female pop stars in general, though I feel like that's finally changing over the past year or two? And ofc the ATRL hags are hungry for a new crop of divas so we're embracing it
Into The Void
Not sure cause people were quick to call Olivia an MPG after 2 hits which is what Sabrina is doing right now.
Rihinvention
I think it's entirely dependent on a member's age. Someone who's 15 will consider Sabrina an MPG because 1. She's objectively killing it right now, and 2. "Right now" is the most attention they've ever paid to pop culture. She's young, she's hot, she's the age they want to be, she got her first #1 single, and had a 362k opening week. Whereas someone who's 30 will be like "woah, woah, woah…all of this has happened in 5 months. She's got a long way to go. We're not putting her in the same bracket as legends with 2 decades of dominance."
Gelato
people who stanned gen x popstars were probably making the same complaints when millennial pop girls were on the rise. there are lots of good gen z popstars to choose from in 2024, people just need to move with the times and accept it's another generation's time to shine
Arrows
Sabrina's album is already as big or arguably bigger than any Ariana album. Ariana didn't have any truly massive smash #1 hits before the TU,N era either, which is why that felt like the moment she became a true MPG. Although Ariana was a much bigger celebrity even prior to TU,N than Sabrina is now, so it's hard to really define what makes a MPG 3

Paddy
Yes. Many ATRL members run after success, once a girl gets a cute hit and cuter album she suddenly is the next BIG thing that ATRLers won't stop talking about constantly.
Erreur2 La Nature
Absolutely. Anyone that gets a hit on Spotify is being called a MPG on here. I've never heard of so many artists (irl) that are called mpg on ATRL.
By the Water
That's because most of the girls that are actually among the top artists at the moment don't have that many albums (Billie, SZA, Dua, Olivia) while the girls that have more albums (Taylor aside) are on the decline or just bombing. Like ATRL likes to refer to Britney, Katy, Gaga and Beyoncé as MPG but then why aren't the likes of Mariah, Madonna, Celine or Whitney ever included in the conversation? Devin
absolutely, when users make excuses for non-talented artists or push the "relatability" narrative.
Nazareth
Yes. Being the flavour of the moment versus actually having several hit singles, across multiple eras, and being widely recognised for your work are not mutually exclusive at all. Since Ariana, the standards have been lowered and everyone's suddenly an MPG. If we're being honest, streaming has also become larger than ever and you have the younger artists breaking a lot of records, so we can't exactly rule them out. I think that touring power should be the barometer for success today. If a Pop girl can tour at arena level minimum, in 3 continents, has hit albums, hit singles and has sustained that success for their past 2/3 eras, they should be considered MPGs. I think the MPG title should be reserved for current artists, so that does include some of our faves who are still charting and are still scoring hits. Mariah, Madonna, Whitney and Celine are beyond and above MPG status, they're icons and legends.
