Teen Spirit Posted September 5 Posted September 5 Dark Horse is one of the best pop songs of the 00s & helped the trap/pop trend. That's all. 1
Robburro Posted September 5 Posted September 5 the second part is incredible and i'm still sad to this day that Katy never tried something like this again 2
bumpah Posted September 5 Posted September 5 i love the deep cuts specially choose your battles and love me
nostalgic Posted September 5 Posted September 5 (edited) This Is How We Do deserved better. The non-Luke tracks (sans Unconditionally) are far better than the ones he had a hand in. Edited September 5 by nostalgic 1
Sugar-Rush Posted September 5 Posted September 5 I can't tell if people are joking or not when they praise the second half of the album; are we listening to the same thing? Ghost, This Moment, Love Me, BTGOG and It Takes Two sound like filler imho. At least the first half of the album has catchy hooks and choruses, but the second half only has a few standouts like Spiritual and CYB which are deluxe tracks. 1
Sheep Posted September 5 Posted September 5 (edited) This album deserves a proper editorial retrospective from a real journalist and reappraisal from pop fans at large. This was the exact moment that everything went wrong(and right) for Katy Perry and also served as the explosive finale to Dr. Luke and Max Martin's collaborative dominance in pop music over the decade prior. There's so much to both celebrate and criticize about this album, it really is a rainbow() of sounds, tone, decision making, and quality. Her plan to make a heavy divorce album with extremely dark themes being thrown out in favor of TD 2 was the first nail in her coffin as it permanently cheapened her image, but also lead to some of the greatest pop tracks of the 2010s, several of which were YEARS ahead of trends at the time(Birthday and Walking On Air preceding the disco and house revivals but being some of the best tracks to come out of either trend, for example). It also has some of the worst aging tracks not just in her discography but from any of the late 00s/early 10s pop girls, but also houses some of her greatest songwriting and vocal performances in the serious cuts. For every piece of blatant plagiarism from Puke and Bonnie, there's another track which was deeply inspired; behind every instance of deeply misguided cultural appropriation, there was a legend at her peak baring her soul to the world in a way rarely seen among pop superstars. Higher highs and lower lows is a common criticism/defense thrown around in stan circles whenever a project doesn't fully work out, but I think it's never been more true than with Prism, which is fascinating when you consider that high highs and low lows is basically the entire lyrical theme of the work. If Katy didn't end up the bitter rival of the two most popular and celebrated global superstars of her generation and #1 enemy of both their fanbases during the Prism era, this album would be remembered as a classic. They sound like songs Taylor could release today and get the #1 with take with that what you can 1 3 1

Rivaling with Gaga didn't hurt her career please Taylor on the other hand… 3

Nobody around at that time other than Beyonce had the talent to look good next to Gaga and nobody has sustained Taylor's level of popularity since Madonna. Both feuds made Katy look bad by comparison and along with the more serious side of Prism being more or less swept under the rug during the promotions birthed the out of touch kids bop clown image that she unfortunately still has to this day. Not to mention that it's been said Gaga pulls strings behind the scenes to make moves against girls she doesn't like. Edited September 5 by Sheep

Ramcoro Posted September 5 Posted September 5 Has some really good songs. A good thing about Prism (unlike Teenage Dream or even her other albums) the best songs aren't singles. So they didn't get old. This Moment, Walking on Air, and LL are amazing. TD singles are superior but because they got overplayed it took a moment for it sound "fresh" again. 2

"most popular one around the same time" wasn't PRISM released in 2013 and 2014 Yeah, Gaga was totally dominating in 2014. As for the second comment, not sure what you want me to do about that. 1

As for the second comment, not sure what you want me to do about that. I edited my post already to clarify. Gaga was not the most popular in 2013-14, Taylor was in the United States. Red was gigantic and 1989 was around the corner/overlapped with the end of Prism. She looked less talented than Gaga and less popular than Taylor. Once you're made the "rival" of a generational superstar you've already lost, Katy had that happen to her twice within a couple of years and it ruined her image. The only time being pitted against a megastar worked out was Prince and even then it only worked because he was more talented than all of his peers combined. Edited September 5 by Sheep
