And I still dream of the day I can finally sing to Irreplaceable with 60k other people in a stadium. Technically, it was still a sophomore slump (as most pop artists' 2nd albums are) but her putting out such a better album than her debut was what made it iconic to the fans over time. She took all the great parts of the DIL era/album and cranked it to 9000.
mons†er Posted September 4 Posted September 4 This wig will forever be my favorite hair on her. And these lips Beyoncé would have definitely gotten Best Photo of The Week on ANTM. This photo is just 120/10. 5
BraveNewSeth Posted September 4 Posted September 4 Love seeing all this B'Day love. It's in my trinity for a reason. 3

JonginBey Posted September 4 Posted September 4 An album with Suga Mama in its arsenal could never sit at the bottom. 2

Rihanna, Gwen, and Christina only sold 1.4-1.7m and even Loose only sold 2.3m. I'll say the era was flopping in Europe but BL collab gave it a second life and managed gold which is still not good but okay. Still it did 6.5m WW. That's great 2
ChrisTheLoner Posted September 4 Posted September 4 Happy B-Day to her best album Everything about this album just screams Classique, Iconic, and Legendary! She really came through for this album
nostalgic Posted September 4 Posted September 4 (edited) Ring the Alarm really grew on me over the years. I absolutely adore it - so underrated! Along with the Creole classique Deja Vu. This will always be her definitive album for me. Edited September 4 by nostalgic
king_queen Posted September 4 Posted September 4 All of this B'Day praise!!! I never thought I'd see the day Her 3rd best album behind ST and Renaissance but HANDS DOOOOWN her best era
NOW Posted September 4 Posted September 4 I remember overplaying it to the point that I was over it for several years after but it's really aged like the finest of wines. Suga Mama and Kitty Kat gradually revealed themselves to become the best tracks off the album.

That's great I am well aware of how much it sold domestically and internationally. I never deemed it a flop, I said the era was a slump. Slump =/= a flop. A sophomore slump means the 2nd album did not perform as well as the artists' first in amount of hit singles and overall sales. That is 100% correct in regards to B'Day, re-release and all. A second album can still be a success while also falling to the sophomore slump curse. It happens, no matter what commercial climate we're in. In the world of popular music, the public is fickle and it's rare that one will keep the same level of momentum or all of the same amount of fans of a smashing debut. You have to start low-mid tier in your debut era, like for instance Madonna, to outdo it. Actually, I think it is better for the sophomore to slump so the pressure can be temporarily off while growing as an artist and establishing new ideas and the loyal following. That is, if an artist is driven enough. Some just keep having diminishing returns because they either tried to re-create the debut or couldn't keep a good pace. Edited September 5 by Soda Pop Queen
Chris Posted September 5 Posted September 5 The fact that everyone underappreciates this album deserves actual warning points. Smh.
