JoJo really ate on Reckless.

While I've always been slightly mixed on Mad Love as a whole (it's decent and contains some of the best songs of her career but definitely has a "my label wanted some palatable GP friendly commercial bops" vibe to it), this is easily my favorite song off the record and one of my favorite JoJo songs in general.

Rarely do we ever get songs about a woman taking blame for hurting her male partner given that it's typically the other way around (the masterpiece I'm A Ruin by Marina & The Diamonds is a good exception to this rule), but the way the lyrics of this song showcase JoJo's vulnerability by having her admit how she broke her lover's heart and went as far to take his virginity when he was drunk always felt like a knife to the gut and took me aback the first time I listened to it. This is easily one of the strongest songs she's ever put out and I wish it got a lot more recognition and the fact that it wasn't on the standard edition is just wild to me.

Agreed on the mixed feelings. On one hand I really enjoyed the album for what it represented: her first album after 10 years and that legal battle with Blackground; on the other, some songs were so inauthentic and just a bit... mediocre. But the bonus tracks were really cute. Could have been on the standard instead of songs like I Can Only or Fück Apologies.

Can't wait to read her book and see what she has to say about Mad Love and her time with Atlantic Records.

I really want her to spill the tea. She's had some private convos with a friend of mine and told her that she doesn't like the album outside of a few songs dd :rip:

I like this song. I'm SOOO glad Jojo is a woman cause if a man made this song he would've been crucified lol.

mad love is a weird era for me. There are songs I love off it like reckless, like this, edibles, i am and good thing. You can tell she just put out the album cause her label made her. It is her weakest project. The rejected songs are better than most of the album. Minus the songs above.

I agree especially considering the song opens up with a lyric about getting someone drunk for their first sexual experience. It reminds me of how controversial and poorly received Zara Larsson's Ain't My Fault would be if a guy released it and changed the lyrics to be about a girl :rip:

especially how this song right before the me too movement. That song would've been played as evidence in court if it was made by a guy :dies:

Oh dear Jesus. Just listened to the released verison of ain't my fault in forever (listen to the demo version about her stealing a girls man which she changed cause she though it would've been controversial) that would've been worse than maroon 5's animals and blurred lines combined :biblio:

Her thinking lyrics about stealing a girl's man would be more controversial than lyrics about how she wants to **** a guy without asking for his consent. Bless her :rip:

Edibles, Reckless, Honest and Good Thing were and are still great. Good To Know and Trying Not To Think About It are both much better projects though.

Not you snubbing Music, Mad Love, Honest, and High Heels (though it's a little bit corny and feels like a TMYLM leftover - I love all those songs. When it comes to the rest (I adore all the ones I bolded) I Can Only is decent enough and imo it could've been the biggest hit of the era considering it has a catchy chorus and Alessia was a radio magnet at the time, F*** Apologies is horrendous and I just know she hates it dd, FAB has okay verses and I like Remy's part but the shitty chorus drags it down, Vibe is boring overproduced gym music with no soul (and a fitting description considering Atlantic put it on so many workout playlists :rip:), Clovers is listenable but lowkey a snooze, and Rise Up is one of those annoying self-empowerment ballads a la' Fight Song/Roar that I never really cared for.

So at the end of the day I only really use 10/15 songs which means it's probably above average in my book. I'd like it more if another pop girl released it but I always felt like JoJo was too good for an album muddled with filler and overproduced pop radio fodder that never truly felt like her.

This is my song! She loves this song so much. I remember in 2015/2016 she spoke about it in an interview long before Mad Love came out, it was still titled Reckless With Your Heart at the time too. This song kinda set the tone for good to know and trying not to think about it.

I love Mad Love, idc. Was it safe? Yes. But the songs are well crafted pop songs and it did what it needed to do. Atlantic just sucked at the promotional push and chose all the wrong songs as singles.
