MoonGoodandHappy Posted September 3 Posted September 3 (edited) How has TikTok impacted the music industry ? What has TikTok changed positively and negatively in the music industry ? Edited September 3 by MoonGoodandHappy
dejmieeen Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Showed that all you have to do is release 2-minute long and catchy songs to make all those cringe people dance. 4 1 1
Robyn. Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Tik Tok is the best thing to happen to the music industry in a long time, no matter what boomers say. It has literally allowed independent artists like Tinashe to have their moment, or artists that have been flopping for years to have another hit like Made You Look by Meghan Trainor. And the fact that labels don't get to chose what goes viral or not, makes it even more organic. 3
Princess Aurora Posted September 3 Posted September 3 I think Tiktok did justice to some songs and singers tbh.
GipJo Posted September 3 Posted September 3 TikTok gives artists more ways to capture their audiences, but it also brings the overall music quality down. 4
Luckitty Posted September 3 Posted September 3 a good thing about tiktok is that it gave a chance to completely unknown artists to become successful and even chart without the help of a label 1
Garbaj Posted September 3 Posted September 3 tbh TikTok is a really main source/help to having your music consumed. whether you want to admit it or not, TikTok has helped some of the biggest artists that we see today find continued success with quick songsl; "Doja Cat", "Charli XCX", "Ice Spice." their blowups have been mainly due to TikTok and going viral. That's definitely a positive because its introduced a whole new way of having a hit without having radio or label support "Million Dollar Baby", "Mamushi", "Lovin On Me", "Nasty", "Greedy", and even has helped old songs skyrocket and gain a boost in popularity. Now a negative would be... artists doing anything and everything to go viral. 1
DonnaSpring Posted September 3 Posted September 3 It has ruined music, songs are too short, no bridges, no depth and has killed award shows. Tv appearances everything is about tiktok and making instant gratification, real singers are sidelined for gen z fodder who last 2 songs them disappear
Paddy Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Olivia Rodrigo, Benson Boone, Chappelle, even Raye got their biggest streams from there or were discovered there. It gives artist incredible opportunity to reach a massive audience.

Ultimately, I think it's more beneficial from an artist discovery standpoint (ie, not needing a label to get a hit or build an audience), BUT NOT beneficial in terms of sustaining a career, artist development/performance acumen, etc. I do think that it's decreased the value of music though: shorter songs, no bridges, lost art form of creating an album, emphasis on followers/engagement vs. improving your craft. So, it has its pros and cons for sure. But if you look at an artist like Doja, she was able to perfect both sides of the coin. The artists making the most of TikTok are the ones that understand the benefits of both "the new school" and "old school" approaches to artist development + marketing. 1 1
Pheromosa Posted September 3 Posted September 3 I think its not great overall but the acts that do blow up on TikTok are quickly washed out of the system if they don't have talent so I'm not concerned. 1
Hector Posted September 3 Posted September 3 It's impacted the industry so much do that's it's rare to find a current successful song that isn't viral on TikTok. Also with some exceptions, it's easier to produce one hit wonders with new artists since the listeners have such short attention spans.
bielneira Posted September 3 Posted September 3 It brought good and bad outcomes with it. A good thing is that any artist can breakthrough at any time, so there's hope for everyone. A bad thing is that artists are making trash music just so they can go viral on there, so quality has depreciated over time.
MatiRod Posted September 3 Posted September 3 It's gotten to the point where most labels marketing plan is literally "make a lot of TikTok's and pray you go viral".
