umich Posted August 30 Posted August 30 These three hits had a monopoly over the Hot 100 summit for eleven consecutive weeks in late 2013 to early 2014: Eminem feat. Rihanna - "The Monster" (4 weeks) Pitbull feat. Kesha - "Timber" (3 weeks) Katy Perry feat. Juicy J - "Dark Horse" (4 weeks) Which of these hits do you prefer?
Rihinvention Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Juicy J felt like an after-thought on Dark Horse. Whilst Pitbull and Kesha are retrospectively revered, at the time, people would judge you for saying you liked them. Eminem and Rihanna have always been shamelessly cool, and it has the markings of a pure collaboration. It's Eminem's song, and hits spitting fire, but Rihanna's pop hook is what you remember. I would say for that reason that 'The Monster' is the best proper pop-rap collab, even though it's my least favourite song of the 3. Dark Horse was just a featured rap verse and Timber's country-dance vibe made it feel like a guilty pleasure bc you knew kids were listening to it too. 1
Reginald Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Timber was a novel bop at the time, before the country-pop schtick was overdone by literally everyone. Dark Horse was great, too.
A Million Lights Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Dark Horse is top tier Timber is cool Never really liked The Monster tbh. It's just not as good as Love The Way You Lie and Numb 1
ChooseyLover Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Timber sounds like a real collaboration. Nobody really cared about Juicy J. 1
YourFavoriteWeapon Posted August 30 Posted August 30 All of them are great but The Monster is my favorite.
Brooklyn Baby Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Dark Horse is the best song here. Also Juicy J's verse eats idc
JackOfHearts Posted August 30 Posted August 30 For me it's definitely Timber. Funnest collab, doesn't take itself so seriously as the other two, it's just a bop. As someone else said, Juicy J feels like an afterthought on Dark Horse, and Eminem with Rihanna have better collabs than The Monster. 1
