Why is Emily Haines (Metric) not included in most alt girl discussion?

She made a pretty big name for herself with her band Metric and how they managed to get a #2 album in their home country Canada (as well as a #5 and #6 album), an appearance on the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack (where both versions of their song have 232M streams combined), sold out shows across the world, and a pretty loyal and cult fan base. Even with all that success, her musical output still feels a little underappreciated and overlooked in my eyes and I wish more people included her in the discussion of alt/indie rock girlies because her music is IT. I would honestly put her up there with the likes of Lana and Fiona in terms of alt girlies with a strong pen game because her ability to create catchy melodies and tell stories with her lyricism is truly a gift that few people possess.

If you're unfamiliar with her music, here are some of her best songs with her band Metric:

Her solo work is also overlooked and truly magnificent, an excellent piece of haunting moody indie pop excellence:

Metric can do Finally out of P.E but Brie can't do Synthetica.

Finally people here know of her :jonny5:Judging by the first couple responses, I was under the assumption I'd be a lone wolf in stanning her.

How do you guys rank the Metric albums? For me it's probably: Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? > Synthetica > Live It Out > Fantasies > Formentera II > Art of Doubt > Formentera > Grow Up and Blow Away > Pagans in Vegas (less said about this album the better lmao :rip: )

They had some great songs but most people who were late teens/early 20s in Canada during their peak thought of Emily Haines as an elite nepo baby, and their reputation in the Toronto music scene wasn't very great so that's probably why they never really broke out globally.

Given that I'm American I never really knew that about her dd :rip: I had no idea that she's a nepo baby or that the Toronto music scene didn't **** with her.

I mean they have great music, and it was all a million years ago so who cares! Just enjoy it :gaycat:

It seems weird that they weren't bigger globally until you know how the locals felt about them/her, and then it all makes sense.

Why isn't she compared alongside artists like Lana and Fiona? Girl nn they're quite different from Metric. I'd compare them to other acts that had a quasi-hit in the 00s here in the States with Help I'm Alive and then kept making music (like idk Feist? but 1234 was a proper hit so), I definitely wouldn't compare her/Metric to any solo artists. Not sure about the local Canadian scene.

Great band though, been mostly tuned into them since the early 10s. I think I need to check out the rest of their albums. From what I know: Fantasies > Live It Out > Formentera > Art of Doubt > Synthetica

Girl I was more-so saying Emily's pen is as good as the main alt girlies not that her musical output is remotely similar to theirs :rip: Sorry for the confusion dd

I would definitely skip Pagans in Vegas (it sucks and most of their fans hate it, idk if Emily even likes it :rip: ), if you plan on revisiting their discography and definitely check out Formentera and Formentera II, they're both really great, though I much prefer the latter.

Ooo this is tough! I think my list from fave to least fave is:

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?

Fantasies

Live It Out

Pagans In Vegas

Grow Up and Blow Away

Synthetica

Art of Doubt

Formentera

Formentera II

Your 'Pagans In Vegas' slander will not be tolerated.

You're the only Metric stan I've seen to put that MESS above GODthetica but at least we have the same album as #1, they're never topping Hustle Rose/Combat Baby/Wet Blanket/On a Slow Night imo :jonny:

Excuse me, but wtf did you just say about Pagans? It's one of their most cohesive albums.

Girl that album is ass. Fortunes, The Shade, Cascades, and Blind Valentine are the only ones I use. :rip: It was cool for them to do a song that's purely just instrumental but them doing three in a row to close off the album was just bizzare and a chore to get through. It would've made a cute EP but…

Once again, I am telling you to stop all slander and harassment against Pagans!

I love the instrumentals! I actually just play those when I'm in the mood for something synthy without vocals!

I do agree with you that they're never toping those Old World songs :jonnycat: That album is everythiiiinnng. Succexy, Dead Disco! Whew lemme listen to that album right now before I go to bed! :loud:

I remember reading about how she was difficult and a b*tch but I always just thought people were being sexist because she was the frontwoman of the band. Maybe there is some truth to it lol

I also don't think I knew about this elite nepo baby thing! :chick2:

I know a few people who have met her and they said that she's a sweetheart but then again she may act different to fans t compared to how she might act to people in the industry and those she'd deem to be "the help". Many such cases :rip:
