ericcartman Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Narrative/backlash. Not every album can be acclaimed. Taylor already has acclaimed albums with high scores and entries on all time lists. Not every MPG has that. 2

EnigmaticAndroid Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Because it's a regression for Taylor, a lot of the writing is clunky and doesn't quite work, and it's arguably her worst body of work yet. 1

The Music Industry Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Y'all act like it's extremely panned 76 is still nothing to be ashamed of 3
Folklore89sm Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Too much too fast. 31 songs is ridiculous, especially when only about half of them are genuinely great, with the rest being made up of filler and a couple of really bad songs (TTPD, ICDIWABH). It was also pretty bad timing. A megastar releasing an album in late Spring, only for it to be lacking melodically and mostly a bloated marathon of self-destruction and wintry-sounding ballads was a risk. The lack of sonic experimentation or growth is also offputting. I'm not saying every album has to do something new, but some of the Antonoff tracks sound straight from MIDnights or the 1989 vault, and much of Dessner's contributions would sound at home on the cutting room floor of Folklore and Evermore. TTPD doesn't go anywhere new for Taylor's sound, save for a few more country-tinged tracks and pop-rock songs. Taylor and Jack need a professional divorce. Or at least a lengthy separation. I don't even blame Jack in the way that others do because he is capable of doing great work with other artists (he once was a great producer for Taylor too). It's just that they've become each other's "yes" men. They don't challenge each other creatively anymore and they feed each other's worst habits. 1
Phaunzie Posted August 28 Posted August 28 (edited) Because Taylor has shown she can do better, unlike some of the girls in your post. She can write, produce and sing, she is a triple treat. I hate the girl but at least she has made progress. I believe that she needs to ditch the pop genre altogether and embrace other sounds. GIVE US SOME GRUNGE TAYLOR. The majority of the girls in your post ran back to what they are good at, went for the most commercial sound they could find or are using past controversy to make a statement. Taylor made a misstep but I believe she got more to show. She also needs to lose the squeaky clean girl next door image, it getting stale. Edited August 28 by Phaunzie

That's a funny one because it literally got its best reviews the first few hours after release. https://x.com/thepoptingz/status/1781186457857560737?s=46&t=IRZrfcqlpvk4JdLyi-YvkQ

ahauntingnearu Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Because it's a bloated, pathetic mess? Especially when you consider what / who it's about She needs to take a LONG break from making music. Like take a good 5-10 years, queen
Wicked Posted August 29 Posted August 29 It's not an album that critics still heavily influenced by rockist artistic ideals would like. No grand narrative within the album, it's an artist deep into their career but it's not risky etc,. That being said some of them albums with higher scores is just as bad/mediocre as it and I have no idea why they have high scores,so... 15 hours ago, Folklore89sm said: Too much too fast. 31 songs is ridiculous, especially when only about half of them are genuinely great, with the rest being made up of filler and a couple of really bad songs (TTPD, ICDIWABH). STMG23 Posted August 29 Posted August 29 I love the album but I see two main reasons for the reviews it got: It's too long. I wouldn't say there's axactly filler. But it could have been trimmed. Sucks to stan someone whose worse tracks are still so good they can't be left off the record. It feels like it's standing still somewhat. The records since 1989 always somewhat evolved and changed (sans Evermore, which feels like part 2 to Folklore). Sucks to stan for someone who has evolved so much in the past decade. Also, she probably is a bit oversaturated now. If she just pauses, really pauses for two years and comes back with a great record, critics will rightfully be at her feet again. Sucks to stan someone who churns out quality record after quality record after quality record. 1
