Didn't she herself call ROL her most quintessential album?

Probably Like a Prayer? It has strong imagery, the religious themes, it's bold yet vulnerable at times. All things I associate with Madge. My personal favorite is Ray of Light and it's the one I recommend the most to people, but LAP feels like it encompasses her identity as an artist the most.

really tough one... erotica and lap are great examples.

but i think i'd have to go with ray of light - it has everything that makes madonna madonna: unexpected reinvention, underground sounds brought to the mainstream, dance tracks, introspective tracks, spirituality etc etc

plus it's probably her best

True Blue

To me, True Blue is the iconic Madonna album with artist-defining songs like Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, True Blue, etc.

Ray of Light is my favorite Madonna album, but I don't think it's representative of her overall career/style in general the way True Blue is.

True Blue is considered the album where Madonna leveled up, Like A Prayer feels like it has so much of the iconography of Madonna and then Ray of Light is the best example to her pushing the boundaries. My answer could change depending on the day honestly, but today I'm saying Like A Prayer; feels like it has the commercial appeal of TB while still being pretty experimental and bold like Ray of Light

I'm a big Madonna fan, but I never understood the praise for True Blue. I'm sorry, it's just too soft for me, lol. I prefer the raw Madonna.

It's Like a Virgin. All of those singles were iconic.

Wanna say ROL but it's LAP

There simply isn't one, because the 'quintessential' mark of her career has been reinvention, which is the antithesis of being defined by one era.

Probably Ray of Light, but Like a Prayer comes very close.

Not Ray of Light :rip:

Erotica or Like a Prayer

what prevents me from calling ROL her quintessential album is its lack of controversy thus i'd say LAP, it has everything when i think of madonna: reinvention, huge hits, religion, controversy, sexy imagery, supporting gays, iconic performances...

If we're using this definition she doesn't have just one quintessential album because she's so diverse and each album is necessary for understanding her artistry imo

I think it's a tie between True blue and Confessions honestly. The latter has Hung up which is simply too iconic and recognizable even for some of us gen Z kids who were alive (maybe very small but still) when it was released.

American Life because I'm different and edgy :gaycat4:

I mean it depends when you got on the train and in a world where it's relevancy is reduced through the gone-ness of long since broken societal taboos . . the LAV era was that one album which made everyone sit up and realise this was more than just another female pop singer, (It's just a pity it never got more videos). It's the album that put her on the map and unique in that for the world outside the U.S. "Into The Groove" is part of and synonymous with this era.
