Suilen Posted October 19 Posted October 19 I probably should've given Rainbow more spins before submitting because some songs grew on me later, but I still wouldn't say it's among my favorites. A bit left-field, a bit summery. It's an interesting record at least, and some sounds deserved to be improved upon/revisited later, but she decided to become the queen of rock. 2
Kyle-x Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Real me is super fun and I can see why it's so high, it definitely stands out in her discography. I'd like like 5 other RAINBOW songs to be ahead of it though sksksk 1
Graves Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 (edited) Track #2 on Duty HIGH SCORE: 10 x 10 (Graves, Suilen, Kyle-x, SA*KURA, UrMom, blueberries, Maresia, AMIT, Fevesy, confide in me) LOW SCORE: 2 x 1 (AvadaKedavra) HOST SCORE: 10 One of her all-time greatest album openers, the Duty title track is a powerful and mysterious piece of music that was far too good to be left as only an album track. This was one my earliest Ayu discoveries and I've always revered it. It's so entrancing, isn't it? A perfect package, from the vaguely middle-eastern instruments to the way her voice flows like silk over the verses... Oh my god, and the chanting!? Like there are so many elements to this song that sound like they should not work, but they just do! This is a piece of music unlike any other, Japanese or Western. A song without equal. Though never released as a full single, Duty was featured in some beauty clinic commercials, which is nice I guess. Oh! And it received a sort of music video! ...Twelve years after release. ...And exclusive to checks notes ...a Pachinko machine. Why do you toy with us so, Ayu? I guess the lone comfort we Duty fans can take is that it has received some fun live outings over the years. Ayu must be a fan of the song too, even in spite of how badly she's treated it! Even she has to realize that she missed a trick by releasing AUDIENCE over this, right? Suilen: I think I like it more than the singles... Kyle-x: I ******* love this song. It takes power to make serve Gregorian chants in a ***** way. The lyrics are really contemplative and reflective about her status and the passing of time as the new millennium started. The fact there's a music video for this we haven't seen in HD because it's stuck on a pachinko machine is so rude. The "nicely nice remix" is a weird remix that I love and the "Power Mind Mix" is one of her best eurobeat remixes. Invisibility: I looove how unique this is. Gifting contemporary AC Sahara desert music with a dash of Gregorian chants to the world! Whew. Curaga: Love that whip crack lol. Apparently this song is a threat, but it's a truly great song, so I have no desire to sabotage it AMIT: this isn't something they just ***** made, this is in different AREAS what the f- 3/13 Edited October 19 by Graves 3

Kyle-x Posted October 19 Posted October 19 The fact her best selling studio effort has compositions like Duty, vogue, End of the world and Far away is so bonkers. 2
AvadaKedavra Posted October 19 Posted October 19 (edited) Love the spiritual ritualistic spanish feeling but not a fan of her voice here. The song goes too slow too. Wanted something stronger in the chorus But i agree. My score was maybe too low. Just listened and is not that bad Avakadabra no hennie Edited October 19 by AvadaKedavra 1

Kyle-x Posted October 19 Posted October 19 The stage design and the instrumentation during DOME TOUR 2001>>>>> not to mention the iconic camo outfit https://www.facebook.com/AyuLiveVideo/videos/ayumi-hamasaki-duty-dome-tour-2001-a/3626717684264981/ 2

Kyle-x Posted October 19 Posted October 19 The fact that the SURREAL maxi single is almost entirely composed of Duty remixes and no remixes of SURREAL is so funny. They bang though, so we cheered! 2
Graves Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 10th Single「A」 Track #3 on LOVEppears HIGH SCORE: 10 x 6 (Graves, Kyle-x, blueberries, Maresia, AMIT, AvadaKedavra) LOW SCORE: 7 x 2 (Invisibility, Fevesy) HOST SCORE: 10 The hits just keep on coming - Trauma is out next! Initially released in August of 1999 as part of the A EP, Trauma is one of the more straightforward bops of the LOVEppears era. Did you miss the guitars from the debut? Well here they again, back with some vengeance. To me, Trauma represents the grand evolution of all of that potential Ayumi was showing on the debut album. The whole package is elevated while retaining those bits and pieces that gave the earlier album so much character - can you say "hello, guitar solo"? All of that while still managing to blend it with the dance sound of LOVEppears. I love the static sounds that start to kick in around the final chorus. The opening riff is iconic too. So many little details to appreciate with these songs. No music video for this one, unfortunately. The A release songs were shafted in that regard. Luckily, the song was used in a Momo no Tennensui water commercial! That's as good as a video, right? At least Trauma became something of a live staple for Ayu, with countless performances over the years. Taste! Lyrically, the song is concerned with... well, trauma. Remembering the trauma of yesterday and predicting the trauma of tomorrow, and the ultimate need to live with both aspects of hurt and happiness. I dunno, I can't quite do it justice but I find myself enamored with the way Ayu expresses things sometimes. Even her dance albums are so thoughtfully written. As a single, the A EP was Ayu's third number one and to this day remains her biggest selling (physical) single of all with over 1.5 million copies sold. I do wonder at what point an EP spills over into becoming an album, but I give her credit nonetheless. She had these people buying everything she released back then. Maybe those water commercials were onto something. Suilen: I like being traumatized by good music. Kyle-x: She had the industry shaking when this dropped. She was getting existential here whew. Invisibility: The opening riff is incredible, and she did make an iconic dance out of this, but the track itself is shockingly meh. Capable, but there's just no momentum (available to stream on acclaimed 2006 album Secret). Curaga: Starts off super strong, but for some reason this one gets a little old as it goes on idk... It's so hard to rank all these dance songs from LOVEppears since they're all so similar but all so quality. Meloetta Carey: what Jamie Lee Curtis said. AMIT: this is like an upgraded version of Hana which was already a major bop so. 5/17 2

Fevesy Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Hate Ayumi for not giving us a 20th anniversary version of Duty btw. Actually, I just had a flashback and I bought the loveppears 20th anniversary and there was a whole ass disc missing from it, and it wasn't even preowned. Good thing I bought it for memorabilia purposes cuz.. 1
