Did Leighton Meester deserve to be the breakout star of Gossip Girl?

With Blake Lively's current backlash it made me think about how she was the main breakout star from Gossip Girl (plus obviously Penn Badgley). But watching Gossip Girl back, Leighton really stole the show whilst Blake just spends 90% of her screen time sighing, rolling her eyes and frowning. Did Leighton deserve better?

Blake Lively is kinda stiff in Gossip Girl. A lot of them are. I tried it to get into it actually like 2 weeks ago and both a friend of mine and I couldn't understand how the acting could've been so stiff for such a popular show, but we both recognized the plot's creativity and how ahead of their time they were for the topics they tackled in a teen show.

She's a much better actress. Unfortunately she's not a nepo baby / nepo wife. But she has a loving husband and child and is much more normal. So she won. :clap3:

Just for these beautifully dated recession bangers, yes.

At least we have my rock queen Taylor M. Hope The Pretty Reckless are working on a new record, it's been a while.

I don't get how Blake got the most famous.

I guess being a celebrity is more important that having talent

Absolutely. She was by far the best actress on the show (aside from Kelly but she was already an established actress). Blake is honestly kind of like Serena in real life aside from the promiscuity. She is pretty and charismatic and that's why she's been able to stay relevant.

Yes. Any blonde actress could have played the Serena role and if someone else had been chosen they would likely have the same status that Blake has now.

Am I supposed to view her as America's Sweetheart? Is that what she represents?

If so, it's all much too saccharine and cloying and I have no time for her (plus that mole has always irritated me). I bet it ate her up inside that Margot Robbie got cast as Barbie (and not her).

I always empathize with the underdog and the character of Blaire was a lot closer to being that than Serena.

I don't think Leighton has enough charisma, and that's what really matters in Hollywood. If any of them deserves to break out globally, I think Chace had the best chance. He's attractive and charismatic like Lively but with actual acting talent. I think he was even in the running to play Captain America before Chris Evans landed the role.

Blair was always the star for me! The only good character from that awful show.

Well Chace has been on The Boys since 2019 and everyone loves his character.

Leighton said she was always typecast as just another "Blair Waldorf" and found it difficult to land the roles she actually wanted.  She's also a serious and introverted person who doesn't like networking, parties, etc and likes to be by herself or with her family.  I think she's a better actress than Blake, but without the connections and (I guess) a good agent, she's sort of at the mercy of the industry.
