VioletsandRoses Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Alicia has always been a great album seller. Her music is even more R&B oriented than Beyonce, yet Europeans tend to buy Alicia's albums more. Her debut album was a much better seller than DIL outside the UK. As I Am managed to outsell IASF in most mainland European markets despite No One being the only big hit, while Beyoncé released 6-7 singles that era with a re-release. I was even shocked to see her Girls On Fire album outselling Self titled in many markets like France and Germany. Is there a reason why Europe seems to like Alicia more than Beyoncé's albums? 1 2
prézli Posted August 12 Posted August 12 She's more authentic. Dido, Adele, Norah Jones, Anastacia are all the same. 3 1
Nightingale Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Did she? Just quickly looked up Sasha Fierce vs AIA stats and Beyoncé seems to be bigger
Pheromosa Posted August 12 Posted August 12 She had a great run, it's over now but great run nonetheless

SupremeGoddess Posted August 12 Posted August 12 What this website seems to fail to realize is that there's an entire world (or worlds better put) outside of gay communities. Alicia had a crossover appeal, both generationally and musically that Beyoncé didn't seem to have in the beginning of her career. 1
mons†er Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Can we have a link to how you can to this conclusion? I'm sure the last time anyone was checking for Alicia was 'Unthinkable'.
Bloodflowers. Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Because Fallin' and No One are the 21st century I Will Always Love You and My Heart Will Go On

MattieB Posted August 12 Posted August 12 You guys would be shocked just how local some of your faves are
stevyy Posted August 12 Posted August 12 CM: 2,7m - DIL -------------------- 3,4m - Songs in A Minor 1,2m - B'Day ------------------2,2m - Diary 2,7m - I am Sasha Fierce ----- 1,5m - As I am 1,0m - 4 -----------------------1,8m - The Element 935k - Beyoncé ---------------660k - Girl on Fire 640k - Lemonade ------------- 60k - Here = 9,175m -----------------------9,620m U might have a point. Even Chartsmasters agrees. Unplugged adds another 500k for Alicia in Europe.
LegaMyth Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Alicia Keys was one of the few American R&B artists that sold well in Europe. I think the type of artist plays a role in this, especially back in the 2000s. Alicia was the type of female R&B artist that straight men comfortable with publicly spending money on. The same could not be said for Beyoncé back in the 00s. Alicia was more "safe", if that makes any sense.
stevyy Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Alicia had much bigger peaks in Europe it seems. That a 2010 album like The Element of Freedom sold over 1,8 million in Europe is extraordinary. People often claim that sales were dead back then.
Taylor fanboy Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Is she? I'm surprised if true. SPS to date, idts though.

Europe love ballads, atrl think it's dance but that's only at certain periods. isn't bey's biggest Europe hit halo? There's one of your answers, the others is bey was never as global as her peers but obviously she's still big WW 1

Her biggest chart hit is If I Were A Boy followed by the Shakira collab BL. Rihanna's biggest hit in Europe is also Diamonds. Same with Adele's discography. Even Hurt by Xtina is her biggest chart in many countries like France.

Each of them has released 4-5 albums since then 1
TipToe Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Alicia was also a bigger seller domestically during her first 2 eras and yet their Europe totals are kinda similar... No big surprise here. She was a big force in the industry back then.
Soda Pop Queen Posted August 12 Posted August 12 She WAS a better album seller but even back then it really was not by a wide-margin outside of their 2nd and 4th albums. Also, realistically 'Songs in A Minor' should be paired up with DC's 'Survivor' album instead of 'Dangerously In Love' as they were both released in 2001 when Soundscan was still king.
