It's a commercial pop album... nothing special about it beside the success

sure it was massive and had some good singles but lord the album tracks are terrible:deadvision: it's not a masterpiece but it was a success

This album is a boring playlist of 2010s radio fodder, but what can we honestly expect from an album that was conceived in an era where basic dance-pop music was being consumed in masse. Katy should be kissing the feet of the creators of those Spotify nostalgia playlists, that's what keeping this albums daily streams afloat :bibliahh:

Underrated actually bcuz am pretty sure Hummingbird Heartbeat becomes a hit even if she releases it today.

Which wouldn't be a bad idea actually since her and her team seem absolutely incapable of making sound career decisions post-Dark Horse

Circle The Drain: One of the better out of the horror album tracks on here.

OT: I have to agree. Besides the singles (and you can make an exception for Firework), the rest of the album is borderline unlistenable and the track sequencing doesn't even flow well. You can't tell me you sit through songs like What Am I Living For and Pearl in full :rip: She's always had a quality control problem which sets her apart from her peers with actual pop bibles under their belt, like Taylor. Gorgeous singles though I'll give her that

I thought we all agreed only the singles are good?

I definitely agree that it's wildly inconsistent. TOTGA, the title track, and Wide Awake have held up incredibly well, and LFN is a camp classic, but Firework is hollow, CG is dated, ET is just weird, and POM was always atrocious, and then beyond that the album tracks are all unlistenable, except maybe Circle The Drain which doesn't fit with the rest of the album at all.

There are a few all-time great pop songs on the tracklist, but most of it is forgettable and dated sludge that has to be waded through to get there :gaycat4:

Yes, there's been a lot of revisionist history about this album ever since poptimism really took off. For SO many years up until like 2021 everyone kinda agreed there were a good amount of filler/bad songs, now suddenly it's a 'pop bible'

More like underrated. I keep seeing that the album tracks are weak although it's not like there are many left after releasing so many singles lol. Hummingbird and Peacock could've been a smash easily. Not Like The Movies and Pearl are beautiful ballads. Circle the Drain and Who Am I Living For? are bops.

Yes, the album has some good songs (Cali Girls, Teenage Dream, ET, Pearl) but I think people tend to look at it with rose colored glasses, it was a cute pop album back then and that was it. Still, I don't think this album is as overrated as Prism :rip:

Well I don't. :)

Also them being overrated doesn't mean they're bad.

Both albums deserve their praise

The hits were commercially huge, and it's undeniable.

But personally I don't think it's that great as a body of work. It's so over the place for me which only gets worse in the Complete Confection edition. An amalgam of very low energy ballads, midtempos and uptempos weirdly placed. When I was a stan I rarely played it in full because I was never in the right mood to play it. Looking back I think there isn't a right mood at all. It's messy.

That said, I ADORE Hummingbird Heartbeat. Stunning track, omfg.

It's overrated, some people here treat it like it's some kind of pop bible when its basic af. The only great songs it has are ET, The one that got away and the tittle track.

It's rated appropriately. I only resonated with ET, TOTGA, and Wide Awake, but I can perfectly understand why the other hits HIT. Yes it has filler, but a LOT of pop albums tailored for radio do.

I agree with this. It's not exactly an album, but more of a greatest hits EP + some B-side fillers. There's no consistency in lyrics, production, vibe or quality of the tracks, it's like listening to somebody's 'liked songs' playlist on shuffle.

I know stans like to act shocked at how it was received at the time 'B but number ones!!', but I think it was correctly rated. It's a case were the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Those 2 Kittykats downvoting every comment here :rip: If y'all put this much effort into streaming Jailtimes instead it wouldn't be OUT on every chart in existence. Just saying
