Big Bad Wolf Posted August 11 Posted August 11 (edited) This album gets a lot of praise on here for being something of a "Pop Bible" — do you agree? For me: This album is totally overrated. It's a cute collection of songs but it doesn't hold up that strong as an album, a lot of these songs are just there. Let's break them down: Spoiler Teenage Dream: Obviously, a great pop song that was produced really well. But anyone could have made this a hit. Last Friday Night: Cute for the time, but it's not something I'd ever go back to listen to nowadays. California Gurls: Cute fun pop song. Firework: Not my cup of tea, but I will also give it a pass. Peacock: Well no. Circle The Drain: One of the better out of the horror album tracks on here. E.T: I know yall love but I never cared for this one. Who Am I Living For?: It's a no from me. Pearl: Boring. Hummingbird Heart: I actually somewhat enjoy this sound and style for her! Not Like The Movies: Meh, boring ballad. Is this album severely overrated or is it deserving of the "Pop Perfection" title? Edited August 11 by Big Bad Wolf 2 11

curiousladybug Posted August 11 Posted August 11 It is in no way overrated. I'd even say it's underrated because it got no Grammy's that it deserved at the time. And I say this as someone who's really not Katy's fan. 9 2
Devin Posted August 11 Posted August 11 teenage dream is a masterpiece and one of the albums that defines 2010s music. even if u hate katy u cant take that away from her. 12
ImsoLOUD Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Nope! This diamond certified album is underrated actually. 3

Angels Posted August 11 Posted August 11 it's a great pop album. couldn't escape it back then for a reason. teenage dream is one of the best pop songs of all time! 2
Rev8 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Yea, deffo I am surprised that ATRL can still hate on Katy so much but never touch it (altho the call for her comeback here, was big) I think it just holds a special place in their hearts, because the singles were very beloved back then, and this forum is mostly from that generation.. personally, the songs were cute ...but I dont see them as the best pop can give (even back then)
pisuke Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Everything in the 2010s is overrated. It's the worst decade in music history ever. 2
manuelalex9810 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 A once in a lifetimes (.mp3) album. A diamond album with four diamond songs, still charting on the BB200 (384 weeks), doing 5 million streams daily on Spotify after 14 years and charting in 13 countries worldwide right now. 3

These replies are giving alternative reality and nostalgia based. The album is not an example of excellence of any kind. 1 2
Peak Now Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Not OP forgetting TOTGA i.e. the best song from that damn album, this is FOUL 2
ericcartman Posted August 11 Posted August 11 No. It has 4-5 big pop hits that are remembered fondly to this day. It's not considered some great body of work, doesn't not end up on any critics lists or best of list. It's rated correctly. 1
slw84 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Teenage Dream: A masterpiece. Last Friday Night: Cute cult classic. worked for the moment California Gurls: Cute fun pop song. Firework: A definitive classic Peacock: Such a song for it's time. Cute and campy. Circle The Drain: Great. The one that got away: Good E.T: Very good Who Am I Living For?: Missing something but still good. Pearl: Boring yes but I think of Britney's life Hummingbird Heart: A great album track. Not Like The Movies: Not a fan Part of me: Like the least Wide awake: Love this but for the moment. A classic album that was pretty good. Not great but was singles driven in a good way. Not overrated. Fairly rated. No one thinks this is more than a pop classic and it's not a bad album at all. 1
teresaguidice Posted August 11 Posted August 11 its very bad sans the title track. not just an issue of aging badly (which it did, too) but much of it was incredibly soulless, uninspired, corny, and middle of the road from the jump. a lot of atrl's music world circles around that era in pop and there's so much nostalgia for the album because it was so omnipresent that they can't be objective about it though. 1
Loca Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Reading the poll options after the title almost makes my brain explode 2
4Walls Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Teenage Dream is kind of a tough album to pin down because yes, it has some of the most classic/iconic singles of the 10s, but the non-singles are kinda just….bad? Like I'd say it's one of the most uneven albums of all time, quality-wise. But those singles man…..it hits a spot kinda like how early Britney singles did. Nothing can really hit that high/feeling. 2
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Teenage Dream: this is pop perfection. Always a 10/10. A very special pop song. Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.): this has aged surprisingly well for being a standard dance pop party song in 2010, still a major bop. California Gurls: sounds very dated now (aged way more than LFN, in comparison), but this will forever be a summer staple going forward and should be noted this song captures the fantasy of a day on the beach perfectly Firework: I kinda resent this one for spearheading a horrible 2010s pop trend of self empowerment anthems, however this is one of the better ones to come out of that trend. Cliche hallmark lyrics but very cute and she sounds great. Peacock: this one is bad. Circle the Drain: filler, not bad but I never go back to it. The One That Got Away: my 2nd fave song on this album after TD and has aged excellently! It is a perfect midtempo chill pop song. E.T.: easily aged the WORST of the TD smashes. Sounds super dated now to the point I can't really listen to it. The chorus still goes off though. Only use the solo version - Kanye remix is unspeakably horrid. Who Am I Living For? - bad, unremarkable and doesn't belong on this album at all Pearl - cute, nothing more or less Hummingbird Heartbeat - really good album track! Matches the dreamy summery vibes of the rest of the album really well. Super catchy chorus and strong verses. Could've been a single. Not Like the Movies - really pretty but standard album closer. Think it's a perfect closet for this record. Part of Me - my least favorite TD single by a wide mile. Cliché self empowerment Katy at her absolute worst. This sounds like the worst faux pop rock adult contemporary filler you'll hear in the waiting room for your root canal. Wide Awake - love this one, a perfect final single for TD, love this one for the same reasons I love the title track. Makes me insanely nostalgic. Dressin Up - bad, the demo destroys the overproduced final version
