VioletsandRoses Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Which female pop album sold well with only one smash hit? an example P!nks Funhouse sold 2.2m stateside/6.9 million copies WW which is close to IASF 3.2m stateside/7.5m WW, almost double Circus (3.7m) from the same year. The only smash off the album is So What. im excluding HAC/Adult leaning albums like Back To Black and Norah Jones discography

RideOrDie Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Just now, MerveAksak said: that's on "I'm not dead" but yeah it was omg i really thought that was on funhouse all 7 funhouse singles tanking except for so what damn 2
Tropez Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Does "Britney" count? The lead Slave 4 U wasn't an initial smash in the US, but it's one of those cases where it was a smash. But the album sold over 5M in the US. Or 25 or 30? None had a single as massive as the lead.
suburbannature Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Merry Christmas is somewhere around 20-25 million units with just AIWFCIY as a smash Other songs have started to take off from it, but not in the same way. 1

BornUnbroken Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Adele's "30". Stans can argue all day that it was an underperformance or flopped when compared to her other albums, but her flop would be another girl's hit album. Alicia Keys "As I Am", only "No One" took off on top 40. 2 1 1 1
MerveAksak Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Does In The Zone by Britney count? I love the album but only Toxic comes to my mind as a smash hit from it. (not even being shady, I love Everytime too but it wasn't a smash I guess)
M!X Posted August 10 Posted August 10 (edited) Leona Lewis - Spirit Bleeding Love carried that album to millions sold ww Edited August 10 by M!X
Vixen Eyes Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Kesha - Rainbow went #1 on BB and Praying was the only charting single i think 1
Yog Posted August 10 Posted August 10 (edited) Sam Smith's successful sophomore effort "The Thrill Of It All" (7.06M WW) with the smash lead single "Too Good At Goodbyes" EDIT: oops, pop girls only but my point still stands.. Edited August 10 by Yog
simplywohoo Posted August 10 Posted August 10 24 minutes ago, zuzufruit said: They said smash, not a mere hit. Blow Me was a moderate hit of its time but definitely does not qualify as a smash. I'm very surprised that TTAL is at 7-8m+ WW But even then try was a big hit in Europe and went top 10 in the us as well 1
Great808 Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Believe had legit only one hit and Cher sold millions and millions with that album WW. It's her best selling album even though she released it in her 50's 1
Klein Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Midnights & Lover I guess, if as I read in this thread, OP meant having only 1 smash but other hits are fine. 1
Nightingale Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Sober and Please Don't Leave Me may not have been smashes but So What didn't carry the album alone. Stronger by Kelly Clarkson comes to mind even though MKIA was a cute HAC hit. Thankful too Oral Fixation Vol 2 with Hips Don't Lie Confessions on a Dance Floor in the US B'day
Into The Void Posted August 10 Posted August 10 I think a majority of albums have 1 smash and then moderate hits tbh 2
Tylerbv Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts is super close to diamond but the only smash was Before He Cheats. Jesus, Take the Wheel had its moment, but it's more of a meme than anything

Thankful too Oral Fixation Vol 2 with Hips Don't Lie Confessions on a Dance Floor in the US B'day The Shakira album only sold 4m in 2006. Which is on par with A Girl Like Me and Back To Basics. Plus it had a re-release. Kelly's album didn't do well either. Not even 2m WW. The others are great examples
dumbsparce Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Funhouse doesn't count tf That album had multiple huge radio singles at a time when radio was important if you wanted your album to sell. It wasn't carried by So What alone AT ALL. OIDIA comes to mind. The lead single was huge obvi, but Stronger and Lucky did just ok if not underperform and Last to Know served tankery beyond belief.
SlowGinFizzzz Posted August 10 Posted August 10 Most albums (including Funhouse) have "only" one smash hit, but several smaller hits in addition to that (in this case Please Don't Leave Me, the title track and Sober; and even I Don't Believe You and Bad Influence got tons of airplay over here). 1
