Coffee lovers: Aeropress vs. French Press

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have a coffee maker but realize I drink multiple single cups so it doesn't really do me any good brewing just 1 cup of coffee with my coffee machine.

Does anyone have an Aeropress or French Press and pros and cons of it?

Do you recommend it?

Does your coffee actually taste better?

Is ground coffee find to use without a grinder?

They are nice, but not comparable to a French press. Just get a pour over.

French Press between these. But, I much prefer a good pour over (I personally recommend Chemex).

aren't Nespresso pods harder to find though? I love my McCafe Keurig pods and Costco sells them for dirt cheap

I also have a Nespresso but I don't like the foam on top and it's way more stronger

They're more expensive, but I buy them in bulk online.

Barista here and I'd go for a French press for home use. More aesthetic and easier to start using as you've got enough tutorials online to help you out.

When out, try out hand brews at specialty coffee shops

I invested in a fully automatic coffee machine by De'Longhi and never regretted the choice.

It really depends on how interested you are in getting into speciality coffee. Aeropress will give you a cleaner cup of coffee with better flavours but if you're used to strong coffee then you might find it 'lacking' in comparison to a French press.

Also none of that really matters if the coffee you're buying isn't great. I'd recommend always buying your coffee from a speciality cafe/roasters if you can find it. Avoid buying coffee from the supermarket.

If you don't have a grinder, you should be able to get bag of coffee ground at a cafe, but it won't stay as fresh for long, so you may find it loses its flavour pretty quickly. A hand-grinder is a cheap option and while it's a bit of a faff, your coffee will stay fresh for longer if you're only grinding it on the day of use.

V60 and Chemex are also good options for black coffee at home. You'll want a coarser grind than you would for Aeropress.
