Some songs are INSTANT smash hits.

While some are sleeper hits.

And then there are some that don't really take off during their chart run as singles but eventually stabilize or even grow in streams after their run as singles, with some even eventually outstreaming the hits of the year they were released in. Can this type of hits be considered as legitimate hits?

Yes, why not?

I wouldn't say flop but "A Thousand Years" only peaked at #31 Billboard, but no one can deny it's a super smash

I'd call them streaming hits. Toxic wasn't a big hit in 2004 but it became a streaming hit because of the sample/instrumental.

Yes, I think we can, look at Focus for example.

And that hideous Rihanna / Shakira sing

Yes.

Example:

1) Rihanna's Anti

2) Shakira's Waka Waka in English speaking countries - 2x Platinum in the UK (1.2 million) and 8x Platinum in Canada (640K).

One of the best selling singles in both countries. I believe it's going to be the same in the US. The song did not peak high when it was released but the longevity in these countries are amazing.

Britney's Criminal only peaked at #59, but is already near 300M streams, and her most successful single streaming-wise from Femme Fatale.

Yeah, a hit is something that gains popularity.

Huh? Toxic was a massive hit at the time of its release, reaching #1 in 11 countries and the top 10 in all the countries it charted in (except Japan) and continues to go viral all the time.

No, if you didn't have a high peak, you didn't have a hit.

I'm not sure if Cardigan was a flop because it did debut at #1 (and then failed to make the Year End list :gaycat6:), but 1.3B streams and several rounds of virality later I think it's definitely become a recurrent hit.

Toxic was a huge hit. I wish TRL counted on Billboard..stats would look totally different

high peak can be manipulated by radio$ or mass buying by fans

That's literally longevity, which is what this site constantly throws conniptions over :rip:

A song or album that "flopped" but gained major success with time is more impressive than a trendy hit that gets forgotten.

Came here to say this. It's also not a coincidence it was the only single to flop from Femme Fatale and it also happened to be her first single released under RCA. The best single got the last laugh. :gaycat5:
