I was just thinking about how so many great artists kind of became really sanitized or just completely flopped commercially after being judges on a talent show like The Voice, XFactor or American Idol, maybe not immediately but within a few years of it.

Gwen

Christina

Britney

Katy

Mariah (sans Christmas, and I loved Caution lambs don't slaughter me)

Nicki

Nicole Scherzinger

Alesha Dixon

Rita Ora

Kelly

I'm not saying they deserved to flop, but is there like a Becky G style curse for talent shows or something? Let's discuss and get to the bottom of this mystery ATRL, can you think of other examples or ones that bucked the trend?

I think they just get lazy as it is a big paycheck for comparatively easy work, so they don't put as much effort into their music careers. Plus many of them took years of breaks to be judges, which is almost always a death sentence to your career in the music industry.

Considering most people just don't care about that, I say no.

Your career is probably already tanked if you decide to sit in that chair

Lol no they make a lot of money and transition into a TV career in the long run

No, it has that kind of reputation because the people they book as judges are usually past their prime and have the free time to do it.

But someone like Ariana or Nicki or a lot of the guest judges on shows continued to have successful careers afterwards.

Yep. It's usually a last resort.

Not really but when you're in your prime and starting your career you have no reasons to become a TV judge. Artists that do it are already established, famous, successful and it comes later in their career.

Low-key it does

Mariah, Britney and to a certain extent J.Lo achieved success after their respective talent show gigs.

Katy and Christina were already flops when they joined AI and TV and that didn't change after they left.

Think it's a coincidence. Almost all of these artists' musical output significantly declined in quality either at the same time or after their judging stints. Or in some of their cases, they mostly stopped releasing music regularly afterwards period.

I forgot Ariana did the Voice lol that was so random.

All your examples are artists who were already flopping, except Nicki who had a smash era literally right after

Ariana did the Voice and still got #1 hits

Miley did the Voice and had a massive comeback, won her first Grammys

It depends on the artist

Does it take your career? Or is it a last resort for an already tanking career (with the exception of Ariana), or a career that never took off.

Ariana was smart to do it at (before?) her peak, instead of using it as a last resort, like others do.

No, but what it does provide is an opportunity for these girls to secure a steady income. So, ultimately, they come out on top either way.

Katy Perry: $25 MillionKaty Perry earns an astounding $25 million each year in her role as a judge on American Idol, according to reports. That makes her the second-highest paid judge in the history of the franchise, second only to Simon Cowell himself

I think if you do it long enough, it can. My fave, Kelly, joined The Voice and was on it for several years and now she’s mostly just seen as a TV personality. Of course, she went a step further and got a talk show. But I think people barely view her as a musical artist rather than that lady that now releases covers from her show.

The majority are already passed their primes/flopping which is usually who those shows target as they have nothing else going on for them (Katy, Britney, Xtina etc). There are exceptions like Ariana who was in her peak so naturally she's able to continue having hits

If Ariana or Nicki stayed on they would be flopping for sure but they collected their cheques and got out before it was too late…

if you're already fading you won't gain much after booking singing show judge but acts like miley, ariana even demi did gigs on singing shows and experienced success after
