lots of pop was derivative or nostalgia bait back in the day too, its just the more innovative or influential music is what has stuck around decades later. same will be true for music today.

End thread.

I think this is a common thinking to everyone of any time period who is between the ages of 18-22.

Katy was not seen as original either.

Lady Gaga emulated A LOT of her mannerisms from Leila K.

Cyndi Lauper emulated her vocals from 1920's singer Helen Kane... etc...

Madonna from Maryland Mon Row, and apparently people argued that she was stealing Cyndi's style by trying to be the anti-Cyndi.

Here is the scene in which her mannerisms slightly resemble early-The Fame-Gaga

Wait this is a bop :jamming:

The 90s was the best decade of music for every genre

to be fair music is one of the most recycled and rehashed things in history.

What do you really expect? There are literally hundreds of millions of songs that been created over many decades. Originality is going to become impossible. Yet you, someone who doesn't create it, is going to be a baby about it. :toofunny3: Just enjoy what you get or stop listening. :michael: I don't expect everything to be unique or original and I find plenty of new music that I love, every year and have done so for almost 40 years. Get over yourself.

Art, like trends, repeats itself. Everything is inspired, everywhere. It can't be avoided. It's just that since the digital era when music became so accessible to the masses, we've been able to distinguish specific eras of music and now we have new generations stepping in, inspired and drawn to music by artists from the past and so naturally these new artists mimick those old styles while adding their own flair, evolving the sound. It can be unoriginal while being inspired.

Music gets rehashed all the time, its a constant fact. You can only use so many chords

The real issue really imo is the lack of inventiveness and innovation in the mainstream (and this is not just a problem for music, its a general problem for popular culture). Its one thing to rehash but its another to reframe or to reinvent it in a different manner.

Methinks the rise of Internet and Social Media may have something to do with it as every idea, culture or concept is within reach with one click. As a result of the info overload, we are left with bland, flat, uninspired material across popular culture.

And while it is true that there is still inventive music out there, the fact that they are barely mainstream despite streaming speaks for itself.

More fanfic... Madonna started before Cyndi. By the time Cyndi released her debut single, Madonna had already released 4 singles and her debut album.

It's the other way around.

Its why I stick to my main 3 boys because they always deliver something different.

It wouldn't surprise me if one could unironically find comments like this under the videos for, say, MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This", Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise", The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo Money Mo Problems", and Mariah Carey's "Emotions". And notice how three of those are fairly beloved, but still carry their nostalgic influences on their sleeves.

i agree, music peaked in 1994-2004

well try stanning Lorde and you'll get unique and original music every 4 years

It's true but we would all get bored if we were only listening to old music. You have to find a mix of both new and old.

Yes Taylor Swift immediately came to mind when i read the thread title!
